Coca-Cola Launches Massive Recall Across Europe Due To High Chlorate Levels

Chlorate-contaminated beverages prompted swift action from Coca-Cola as safety measures.

On January 27, 2025, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners announced a massive recall of various beverages across Europe, including Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Fanta. The recall was initiated due to the discovery of elevated levels of chlorate during routine testing, with the affected products having been put on the market since November.

The recall predominantly impacts canisters and glass bottles. Specifically, products carrying production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE inclusive are affected. The recall encompasses several brands, including the popular Fuze Tea, Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico, which are sold not only in Belgium but also across multiple European countries such as France, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, and the UK.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium stated, "We have identified levels of chlorates which do not meet quality standards." While the company did not provide exact figures, they indicated it involves significant quantities of the affected beverages. The Belgian agency for food safety confirmed the recall, emphasizing it was triggered by the detection of these high chlorate levels during the company’s quality control procedures at its Gand production plant.

For the French market, only two specific lots were distributed: the Fuze Tea Peach cans (335 GE2) and Coca-Cola without sugars 1L glass bottles (337 GE1). Fortunately, the company clarified, "These lots were not made available to consumers at retail locations," showcasing the proactive measures taken by Coca-Cola once they recognized the issue.

Despite the recalls, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners claims the risk to public health is minimal. A spokesperson commented, "The analysis showed the probability of associated risk is very low. We have received no complaints from consumers on this matter." The company has been working closely with the relevant authorities across the impacted regions to resolve the issue swiftly.

Chlorate, found occasionally as a contaminant, can enter food and beverages primarily through chlorinated water used during food processing. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), chronic exposure to chlorate can lead to iodine absorption inhibition, posing potential health risks, particularly to children. EFSA has previously indicated, "Even considering estimated high levels, it is unlikely the total exposure from a single day would exceed the recommended levels for consumers of all ages."

Health experts advise consumers who may have purchased the affected products not to consume them and to return them to the point of sale for reimbursement. The company has urged customers, "Don’t consume the affected products; they can be returned for refunds." This measure not only aims to protect public health but also reinforces Coca-Cola's commitment to maintaining high safety standards.

Following the recall, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners expressed regret over the situation, stating they are committed to addressing the matter diligently. They have also assured the public, stating emphatically, "We are constantly taking action to remove all remaining products from the market, and most of the affected, unsold items have already been withdrawn from store shelves."

With this recall, Coca-Cola is sending a clear message about corporate responsibility and safety standards, aiming to uphold its reputation as one of the leading beverage providers worldwide. The swift action to recall products may assure consumers of their commitment to health and safety, even when faced with product quality challenges.

The situation remains under scrutiny as the company continues to coordinate with health authorities and monitor the safety of their products. Those with questions about the recall can refer to their respective local authorities or visit the Coca-Cola Europacific Partners website for updates and information.
