Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan has initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 88,000 cases of its Ayataka white tea product after reports of unusual flavors. The recall, announced on February 1, 2025, affects bottles produced at the company's Zao factory located in Miyagi Prefecture. Some bottles of Ayataka with expiration dates of August 7, 2025, have generated complaints from consumers who described the tea as having differing tastes. While no health issues have been reported from consuming the affected batches, the company has taken precautionary measures to address consumer concerns.
The affected product, Ayataka 650ml PET, is labeled with the cap print “25.08.07+Z,” and it has been confirmed from product quality surveys conducted so far, there are no signs of health-related risks for consumers who may have inadvertently ingested the tea.
Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan has halted production on the specific manufacturing line where the flawed batches were produced. They are actively investigating the issue to determine the cause of the flavor inconsistencies, ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
"We would like to sincerely apologize for the great concern and inconvenience this has caused," stated officials of Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan. They reached out to customers who might possess the affected product, urging them to register for return instructions starting February 4, 2025. The company's dedicated customer service hotline will provide assistance as needed.
The incident has raised questions about product quality assurance processes within the beverage industry, especially concerning popular items like Ayataka, which have been staples among consumers who prefer traditional flavors. The public has shown considerable interest and concern over the quality of beverages they consume.
Consumers are reminded to check their Ayataka products for the mentioned expiration date and cap print, as well as any unusual tastes before consumption.
This recall follows industry trends where consumer awareness around food and beverage safety is higher than ever, urging companies to maintain strict quality control measures. Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan's swift action could be seen as an attempt to uphold its commitment to consumer safety and product integrity.
