The Coca-Cola Company is once again making headlines following its announcement of a large-scale recall of its beverages across Europe due to alarming health concerns related to excessive chlorate levels detected during routine inspections.
On Monday, the multinational beverage giant shared the details of this recall, underscoring its commitment to consumer safety. According to the company's statement, "in consultation with the U.S. Food Safety Authority (AFSCA), we are recalling several products due to elevated chlorate levels." This situation has emerged particularly from drinks produced at Coca-Cola's plant in Ghent, Belgium, between November 23 and December 3.
The recall list includes popular beverages such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Minute Maid, Fuze Tea, and Royal Bliss, all packaged in returnable cans and glass bottles. The affected production codes range from 328GE to 338GE. Notably, these products have been distributed not only within Belgium but also to multiple other European nations, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom.
"While we do not have an exact figure, it is clear this involves a substantial quantity," stated Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium to the news agency AFP. The company emphasized consumers should avoid consuming any products listed under the recall and were encouraged to return them to stores for refunds.
The health risks associated with chlorate, which exists as chlorine combined with oxygen (ClO3-), are well noted. Cholate is recognized as a potential contaminant arising from food processing and water treatment, and its presence at elevated levels can pose public health risks. The World Health Organization has assessed chlorate levels for drinking water, establishing provisional guidelines of 0.7 mg/L.
