Clinton Larsen Resigns From Magesi FC After Heavy Defeat

The coach steps down following dismal start to the season and seeks to allow fresh leadership.

Clinton Larsen, the head coach of Magesi FC, has resigned from his position following the team's disappointing 3-0 defeat against the Carling All-Stars XI during the Carling Black Label Cup on Saturday. The loss, which took place at Orlando Stadium, marked a pivotal moment not just for Larsen, but for the club, which has struggled to find its footing this season.

Larsen's announcement, made live during his post-match interview, surprised many fans and analysts alike, especially considering his recent success with the team. Just last month, he guided Magesi to the Carling Knockout trophy, where they clinched victory with a remarkable 2-1 win over the renowned Mamelodi Sundowns. Those moments of triumph, alongside promoting the club to the Premier Soccer League, were highlights of Larsen's two-year tenure.

“This is my last game as Magesi coach. I am bidding farewell to the club after two years, helping the team get promoted and winning a trophy. Those are two moments I am very proud of,” Larsen told SuperSport TV. His departure, he stated, was precipitated by the team’s current position at the bottom of the Betway Premiership table, having secured only one win out of nine matches, with three draws and five losses.

The pressure mounted as Magesi found themselves facing significant hurdles early on, which Larsen attributed to factors like relentless travel and limited player depth. “Yeah, very disappointing first-half performance. Seven away games in a row. Lots of travelling. I think it’s really taken its toll on the players,” he reflected on the game, acknowledging the toll on the players who, regardless of their effort, were “outclassed” by their opponents.

Key to Larsen’s decision was the recognition of the need for fresh leadership, which he believed could potentially rejuvenate the squad. “It’s not working for me with this group at the moment, and I wanna wish them everything,” he remarked, alluding to his growing concerns about the team's performance and future prospects.

Larsen expressed gratitude to his players, the club management, and the supporters, thanking them for their support throughout his time at Magesi. “I want to just thank everybody—players, my technical team and management, and the chairman for giving me the honour of leading this project for the last two years,” he said, leaving listeners with well wishes for the club's future endeavors.

During his tenure, Larsen has made significant contributions. Under his guidance, Magesi FC not only reclaimed their place among the elite after securing promotion but also showcased their capabilities by winning silverware. His commitment and strategic vision not only uplifted the team but endeared him to the supporters.

Larsen’s departure from Magesi FC opens the door for new leadership, which he believes is necessary for refreshing the approach and energy within the team. “It’s an opportunity for the club to bring in fresh leadership, fresh voice, fresh energy, and fresh footballing ideas, and hopefully, that will be enough to take them to greater heights,” he stated.

For now, as he steps away from the sidelines, the club and fans await news of his successor, and Larsen embraces the uncertainty of his future. “Obviously, I can’t tell you where I’m going, so I’ll be unemployed as of the next 5 minutes,” he quipped, showcasing his characteristic honesty and humility.

With 21 games still remaining this season, Magesi FC faces the challenging task of turning around their fortunes without the guiding hand of Larsen, whose departure marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for both him and the club he has passionately led.
