Cleveland Cavaliers Overwhelm Denver Nuggets With 149-135 Victory

Donovan Mitchell leads the Cavaliers with 33 points as Cleveland extends winning streak to six.

The Cleveland Cavaliers secured their sixth consecutive victory on December 27, 2024, defeating the Denver Nuggets 149-135 at Ball Arena. This win not only highlights the Cavaliers' offensive prowess but also reinforces their status as serious contenders this season.

Leading the charge was Donovan Mitchell, who erupted for 33 points, showcasing his scoring ability and clutch performance. Jarrett Allen contributed significantly as well, posting 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, aiding the Cavs with his dominant presence inside the paint. Evan Mobley and Darius Garland added to the scoring frenzy with 26 and 25 points respectively. This collective effort resulted in Cleveland's best scoring outing of the season.

The game was marked by the Cavaliers taking control early. They trailed for only a brief spell when the Nuggets led 53-50 early in the second quarter. The Cavs then executed a stunning 16-point run, effectively turning the tide. By halftime, the Cavaliers had surged to an impressive 80-65 lead.

Remarkably, the Nuggets’ defense struggled to contain the Cavaliers' firepower, allowing what would become their season-high points tally. Nikola Jokic, the reigning MVP, logged his NBA-best 12th triple-double of the season with 27 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists. Despite this, the Nuggets' effort fell short as they allowed the highest number of points against them all season.

Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. each added 27 points for the Nuggets, but the team's inability to keep pace with Cleveland’s offensive output became evident as the game progressed. Denver, playing without star player Aaron Gordon due to a calf strain, struggled defensively throughout the matchup.

During the third quarter, the Cavaliers maintained their lead effectively. Even as the Nuggets attempted to rally, cutting the deficit down to as few as 12 points early on, the Cavs responded decisively. LeVert contributed strongly off the bench, scoring 13 points, including pivotal three-pointers to reinstate the Cavaliers' cushion.

By the end of the third quarter, Cleveland held onto a commanding 116-101 lead, which they expanded upon as the fourth quarter unfolded. While Denver attempted to recover with aggressive plays and fast breaks, the Cavaliers held firm. The game concluded with Cleveland’s late-game execution sealing their victory, demonstrating both their depth and offensive cohesion on display this season.

The Cavaliers' successful outing signals their increasing confidence and synergy, positioning them strongly for the rest of the NBA season. Under the stewardship of head coach Kenny Atkinson, their strategical adaptations during the game have proven effective, particularly when managing matchups against strong opponents like Denver.

The win sets up the Cavaliers, now boasting the best record in the NBA at 26-4, for their upcoming challenges and showcases their capabilities as they aim for the championship this season. With the strong performances of their core players along with strategic bench contributions, the Cavaliers look prepared for what lies ahead on this ambitious West Coast trip.
