Claudia Sheinbaum Leads Festive Assembly Amid Tariff Concerns

President addresses economic relationship with the U.S. with optimism and cultural celebration.

On March 9, 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led a festive informative assembly at the Zócalo of Mexico City, shifting from initial plans of addressing tariff actions against the United States to celebrating solidarity and national pride.

The cultural event kicked off at 9:00 AM, with performances from mariachi groups, including the Mariachi of the National Guard and the Grupo Armada of the Secretariat of the Navy, creating a lively atmosphere as attendees arrived dressed festively. Groups showcased their traditional clothing, demonstrating the cultural richness of Mexico.

Sheinbaum's decision to hold the assembly came after conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump about the 25% tariffs imposed on Mexican exports by the U.S. administration. "We have decided to respond with tariff and non-tariff measures, which I will announce publicly on Sunday. This is not about initiating economic confrontation but about integrating our economies to strengthen our region against global economic competition," Sheinbaum announced.

Despite the initially tense backdrop of potential tariffs, the atmosphere quickly transformed following Trump's decision to postpone the tariff implementation. Sheinbaum invited the community to come together not only for serious discussions but also to enjoy the festivities, stating, “I invite everyone to gather; we will certainly deliver an important message, but we'll also have a festival for everyone to enjoy on Sunday.”

The president emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Mexico relationship, affirming, "It is necessary to strengthen our economic relationship, respecting our sovereignties, instead of confronting each other.” Sheinbaum reflected on historical moments of cooperation between both nations and called upon attendees to remain vigilant for any future economic decisions from the United States.

She noted, "We are optimistic because on April 2, the U.S. will implement reciprocal tariffs on all countries of the world. Mexico will not be affected as we have no tariffs against them, thanks to trade agreements we have honored for over 30 years. This is foresight, everyone should be ready for any call to action if necessary.”

Throughout her speech, Sheinbaum was met with enthusiastic support from the crowd, with attendees chanting “You are not alone!” when she began her official address. This support underlined the unity and determination of many Mexicans as they celebrated not only their culture but also their national identity.

Closing her assembly with the National Anthem, Sheinbaum underscored her commitment to the welfare of the Mexican people, saying, “Together we are more, we do more, and we go farther. Our strength lies with the people, our mission is the well-being of the people.” She also highlighted recent data showing nearly a 15% reduction in homicides nationwide, attributing this success to cooperative security efforts between her government and citizen engagement.

The event concluded on a high note with performances by La Maldita Vecindad and La Sonora Santanera, who celebrated Mexico's sovereignty through music and cultural expression. This vibrant conclusion left attendees energized and engaged with expressions of national pride.

Sheinbaum's assembly was more than just about economic measures; it served as a reminder of the resilience and solidarity of the Mexican people, especially during times of potential economic challenge. Attendees left the Zócalo feeling bolstered by the success of this communal gathering, underscoring their determination to face any challenges together.
