Claudia Roth Enters Race For Bundestag Vice Presidency

Competition intensifies among Green Party leaders as Roth, Göring-Eckardt, and Nouripour vie for top role.

On March 16, 2025, Claudia Roth, Germany's current Minister of State for Culture, entered the fray for the Vice Presidency of the Bundestag, joining the already competitive race featuring Katrin Göring-Eckardt and Omid Nouripour, both prominent members of the Green Party. Roth's announcement came through a heartfelt letter to her party, expressing her intention to seek the fraktion’s support for the position.

"Out of deep, passionate, and democratic conviction, I would like to apply for the vote of our faction for the office of Vice President of the 21st German Bundestag," Roth stated, highlighting her commitment to public service. This declaration signals her readiness to take on leadership roles at this pivotal political moment.

Roth acknowledged potential skepticism from colleagues, noting they might think, "Claudia has already done almost everything for the party and the parliament; shouldn't it be time for her to step back?" But her response was clear: the current political climate reinforces her decision to run. She emphasized, "These times have convinced me to stand for the position, as I feel I can contribute meaningfully now more than ever." Interestingly, her candidacy is also seen as somewhat of a rebuttal to her contemporaries, with hints directed at Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, implying competition based on age and experience.

Göring-Eckardt, the incumbent Vice President, has also put forth her candidacy, citing her origins from East Germany as part of her motivation to run. She expressed her commitment to ensuring her party does not lose representation and influence, stating, "We should not allow the right-wing instigators to take over this part of our country." This sentiment highlights the urgency surrounding the upcoming elections and the need for effective representation.

Omid Nouripour, the former chair of the Green Party, has similarly submitted his application for the Vice Presidency. He brings personal as well as political narratives to his candidacy, having been born in Iran. Nouripour framed his campaign on his extensive experience across various political roles, asserting, "My biography has taught me to build bridges, bring together different perspectives, and promote respectful debates – far beyond party boundaries." He advocates for diversity, adherence to parliamentary traditions, and transparent governance.

The competition for the Vice Presidency has stirred up discussions about leadership within the Green Party and the representation of East versus West Germany, particularly as these candidates reflect on the party's evolution.

Given the political stage, all candidates are poised to influence how their party navigates increasing pressures from right-wing political factions. Roth's prior experience as Vice President from 2013 to 2021 makes her a familiar figure, yet the party dynamics have shifted since her tenure. With these three candidates making their cases, each has articulated distinct visions for the future of the Bundestag, positioning themselves as the voices their party needs at this moment.

The newly elected Bundestag is scheduled for its inaugural meeting on March 25, 2025, when the presidium will be elected, including the Vice Presidency. Notably, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has yet to secure any of these key positions since entering the Bundestag.

This open contest reflects not only the internal competition within the Green Party but also broader discussions about representation and the party’s strategy moving forward. The upcoming elections will likely set the tone for the party's stance against rising challenges aimed at democratic institutions, amplifying the stakes for each of the candidates involved.

Roth aims to use her platform to promote assertive parliamentary action against the influence of the AfD, emphasizing the need for the Bundestag to maintain its integrity and relevance during these tumultuous times. All three candidates are gearing up for what promises to be a heated and potentially transformative election for the German political sphere.

With Roth, Göring-Eckardt, and Nouripour all vying for the same post, each member of the Green Party will have to weigh their preferences carefully as they prepare to cast votes for leadership positions within the Bundestag. With the political atmosphere as charged as it is, the upcoming election could very well redefine the party’s direction and influence within the national hierarchy.
