CJ Donaldson Transfers To Ohio State For 2025 Season

The former West Virginia star running back joins the Buckeyes, adding depth and experience to the team's backfield.

CJ Donaldson, the former West Virginia running back known for his explosive play and scoring ability, has committed to transfer to Ohio State for the upcoming 2025 football season. This decision marks the next chapter for Donaldson, who is leaving behind a successful stint at West Virginia, where he established himself as one of the premier running backs in the Big 12 Conference.

Over the past three seasons at West Virginia, Donaldson has made headlines with impressive statistics, amassing 2,058 rushing yards and scoring 30 touchdowns across 421 carries. He proved to be more than just a ground threat; during his tenure, he also racked up 190 receiving yards and added another touchdown, showcasing his versatility on the field. His significant contribution included 734 rushing yards and 12 total touchdowns last season, demonstrating his potential as a lead back.

After entering the transfer portal on December 19, Donaldson's move to Ohio State seems to be strategically timed. With the anticipated departure of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins to the NFL, Ohio State identified the need to bolster its running back depth. With only freshman James Peoples and Sam Williams-Dixon currently on the roster, Donaldson's experience and success will be invaluable to the Buckeyes.

The 6-foot-2, 238-pound running back was initially drafted as a three-star tight end out of Gulliver Prep, indicating his potential and athleticism even before transitioning to running back. His transition to running back resulted in remarkable performances, solidifying his position at West Virginia and making him the No. 5 running back listed in the 2024-25 winter transfer portal rankings.

Ohio State's coaching staff, led by head coach Ryan Day, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, and running backs coach Carlos Locklyn, are excited about Donaldson's arrival. This infusion of talent is not just about filling slots but about establishing stability within the backfield, where he could quickly become one of the primary playmakers. "He will have one year of eligibility left, with the option to still redshirt if needed," as reported by Rivals.

Donaldson joins Ohio State at a time of roster transition. The Buckeyes are still pushing forward with high expectations after their recent victory over Tennessee, having made it to the second round of the College Football Playoff. Now, with the challenge of preparing for a rematch against top-seeded Oregon, the coaching staff faces the dual task of emphasizing championship aspirations for the current season and planning for the future.

Expectations are high as Donaldson settles in with his new team. He will meet the challenge of competing for significant playing time against the remaining inexperienced running backs. While freshman James Peoples had shown glimpses of potential with 49 carries last season, he does not match the track record and experience Donaldson brings. The Buckeyes are poised for another title run, and adding Donaldson to the roster creates options not just for depth but also for playmaking abilities.

The transfer portal has been increasingly significant for college football, allowing players like Donaldson to seek new opportunities when circumstances change. The recent trend shows increasing numbers of student-athletes moving to different programs for various reasons, but the common goal remains the same: to improve their prospects and performance.

With Donaldson at the helm of Ohio State's rushing game, the Buckeyes hope to make waves next season. If he can replicate his West Virginia success within Ohio State's system, he could soon be regarded as one of the premier running backs not just within the Big Ten, but nationally.

His addition signifies more than just another name on the roster; it reflects upon the continual evolution of college football. Coaches are ever more reliant on the transfer portal to fill gaps, indicative of the changing strategy and dynamics of team composition. With Donaldson's offensive skill set, Ohio State can focus on addressing other areas of need, potentially seeking support along the offensive line and wide receiver positions.

All eyes will be on Donaldson as he adapts to his new environment and strives to make his mark. The Ohio State fanbase anticipates the fresh contributions he will bring to the table, with the hope of propelling the team back to the pinnacle of college football once again.
