Civitanova Collision And Community Festivities Mark December In Macerata

From serious accidents to cherished holiday traditions, Macerata Province faces diverse challenges and celebrations this festive season.

A serious accident unfolded on Monday, December 18, 2023, around 12:45 PM at the intersection of Via Trento and Via Conchiglia in Civitanova. A car collided with an electric scooter, leaving two young men injured, including one who was transported by helicopter to the Torrette hospital due to severe injuries.

The electric scooter was occupied by two people—the operator, aged 20, and his passenger, also 20 years old. Reports indicate the scooter struck the left side of the car, resulting in the operator being flung onto the car's hood and windshield before hitting the ground. Emergency services, including the 118 ambulance and the local Croce Verde, quickly responded, but the operator's condition was deemed urgent, prompting the call for air medical transport.

Meanwhile, the passenger on the scooter sustained minor injuries, and the car driver was unharmed. Local police are conducting investigations to ascertain the specifics of the accident, which has raised regional safety concerns once again.

On a more festive note, the charming initiative known as "La via dei presepi"—a showcase of handcrafted nativity scenes—has returned for the eighth consecutive year, inviting visitors to explore the picturesque communities of Caldarola and Cessapalombo. Since its inauguration on December 15, the exhibition promises to be available until January 19, 2025, embracing the spirit of Christmas through locally crafted art.

The event encompasses several villages, including Valcimarra, Pievefavera, Croce, Vestignano, and Villa di Montalto, celebrating craftsmanship and reflecting the local desire to preserve and promote their cultural heritage. According to Matteo Vergari, one of the organizers, each installation depicts different stories, intertwining sacred scenes with everyday life details.

The local government, represented by Mayor Giuseppe Fabbroni, has expressed pride over the community's artistic efforts. He indicated the nativity displays not only serve as artistic installations but also contribute to strengthening the sense of community. “What fills us with pride is seeing the commitment of our citizens to enrich their creations every year. The route is suitable for everyone, whether by car or on foot, making culture and tradition accessible to all,” he said.

Meanwhile, Morrovalle's administration hosted its third consecutive awards ceremony to acknowledge residents who have made noteworthy contributions to community service. Four individuals received honors during this event, highlighting their unique impacts on local life.

Nazzarena Acquaroli was recognized for her relentless efforts safeguarding the historical and cultural treasures of Morrovalle, including her leadership at the Archeoclub. Nazzareno Filippetti received accolades for his civic spirit and consistent involvement in community activities.

Domenico Valente, president of the local section of the National Carabinieri Association, was hailed for his service during public events, ensuring community safety. The late Maria Marcelletti, fondly called “Nenella” by her many friends, was also honored posthumously. Family members accepted her award, commemorated for her humanity and dedication to local associations.

Mayor Andrea Staffolani praised the spirit of these citizens during the ceremony, noting the rarity of such selfless contributions to the public good, emphasizing the importance of recognizing those who help uphold the attractiveness of Morrovalle.

Finally, Macerata Province faced significant weather challenges as heavy snow caused road closures. The provincial road 136, known as Pian Perduto, and the road 51 Forcella have both been shut down due to over 50 centimeters of snow, prompting authorities to advise the public to avoid these areas until conditions improve.

President Sandro Parcaroli reassured residents of the Province's commitment to monitoring the situation and urged caution, noting the unpredictable nature of mountain weather.

One tragic incident marred the holiday season when a 28-year-old woman was struck and killed by a train at Grottammare station early Monday. Authorities believe this may have been intentional, as the victim left her bag near the cafe before heading to the tracks.

Rescue services, including the fire brigade and police, were swiftly on the scene, but investigations are underway to confirm the circumstances surrounding her death. Service on the Frecciarossa train line was temporarily suspended before being resumed later, albeit with delays.

The juxtaposition of festive community spirit against the backdrop of tragedy and safety concerns paints the unpredictable picture of life within Macerata Province this December.
