Civil Air Patrol Plane Crash Claims Two Lives

Tragedy strikes aviation community as pilot and photographer die during training exercise

A tragic plane crash occurred on Saturday morning, claiming the lives of two individuals involved with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and leaving one seriously injured. The incident took place around 11:12 AM, local time, when the single-engine Cessna 182 went down near Storm Mountain, approximately 80 miles north of Denver, Colorado, during what was reported to be a search and rescue training mission.

Eyewitness accounts and initial reports from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office reveal the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Northern Colorado Regional Airport, where witnesses reported seeing the aircraft circling before it plummeted. Many pilots and aviation enthusiasts who knew the occupants expressed shock and disbelief, citing the pilot’s strong reputation within the aviation community.

The Colorado Governor, Jared Polis, confirmed the deceased as pilot Susan Wolber and aerial photographer Jay Rhoten. Wolber was recognized not only for her flying skills but also for her commitment to fostering inclusivity within the field of aviation, particularly encouraging women and girls to pursue flying. The lone survivor, co-pilot Randall Settergren, was airlifted by the Colorado Army National Guard to a medical facility, where he is being treated for severe injuries.

Bill Snodgrass, the president of the Fort Collins-Loveland Pilots Association and a fellow pilot, knew Wolber well. He described her as passionate about flying and deeply involved with various aviation organizations, including the CAP. “She was about introducing women to aviation and making it accessible for them,” he noted. Snodgrass recalls their many flights together and her knack for nurturing new pilots.

During training exercises, such as the one Wolber was conducting on the day of the crash, CAP members practice missions aimed at providing various public services, including search and rescue operations and disaster response. This sort of hands-on training is pivotal for maintaining competencies necessary for real-life missions.

According to Snodgrass, the entire northern Colorado aviation community is reeling from the loss. “We lost someone who was making a difference for people,” he said, highlighting Wolber's dedication to the craft and her nurturing spirit. He recounted fond memories of their joint flights, emphasizing the joy Wolber took in flying and teaching others.

“She loved to fly and she loved sharing it with everyone around her,” he added. “Her ability to connect with others, make them feel included, and her genuine hugs were unmatched.” Snodgrass also revealed his concerns when he first heard news of the crash, as he was uncertain who was onboard until he reached out to members of the CAP.

Confirmation of the identities of the deceased came alongside statements from various officials and organizations expressing condolences. The Civil Air Patrol’s national commander, Maj. Gen. Regena Aye, also offered her sympathies, reinforcing their commitment to support the families affected by this tragedy. Aye remarked, “Our members serve because they care about America’s communities. Our people are our most important resource.”

Investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are underway to ascertain the contributing factors to the crash. These investigations are standard following such incidents and aim to prevent future tragedies by identifying lessons learned.

Local weather conditions and flight patterns were under scrutiny during the early hours post-crash. The mountainous terrain of Larimer County can pose several challenges to pilots, especially for those flying low. Speculations discussed among the aviation community include potential downdrafts or loss of altitude during low visibility conditions.

Wolber was not just celebrated as a competent pilot but also as someone who represented the changing face of aviation. Her determination to face challenges, primarily as a woman breaking through barriers, serves as inspiration for aspiring pilots. Friends recall how she advocated for more representation and inclusivity within aviation circles.

Many individuals from the community have since begun sharing their memories of Wolber on social media, highlighting the lasting positive impact she left on those around her. Memorials and tributes have started gathering, showcasing her love for flying and the people she cherished.

With the NTSB and FAA involved, many expect answers to surface, but the emotional aftershock for the aviation community and those closely connected to the victims will inevitably take time to heal. Friends, colleagues, and loved ones are left grappling with the sudden loss, cherishing the memories of two vibrant lives.

This tragic crash is not just about the individuals lost; it's about the legacy they leave behind and the commitment to aviation safety and community service they represented. The Civil Air Patrol will continue to honor their memory and the work they did through their dedication to service to others.

Once investigations conclude, it is hoped they will provide clarity and possibly preventive measures for the future, reaffirming everyone’s resolve to continue improving the safety of the skies. The story serves as both a lamentation of loss and a celebration of those who dedicate their lives to service and the skies.
