Citroën Unveils New C5 Aircross With Bold Design

The 2025 model features enhanced comfort and electrified powertrains

Citroën has officially unveiled the 2025 version of its family SUV, the C5 Aircross, marking a significant evolution from its predecessor. This second-generation model, which debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 2024, shifts away from the softer, rounder design of the previous iteration, opting instead for a more angular and assertive aesthetic. The new C5 Aircross is set to capture attention not only through its striking looks but also with an array of technological advancements and improved comfort features.

With a length of 4.65 meters, the new C5 Aircross is 15 cm longer than the previous model, which measured 4.50 meters. This increase in size positions it among the larger compact SUVs, bridging the gap between the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. The vehicle's width has also increased to 1.90 meters, while the height has grown to 1.66 meters, enhancing its road presence. The wheelbase has been extended by 6 cm to 2.784 meters, providing additional cabin space.

One of the standout features of the new C5 Aircross is its design, which incorporates elements from the concept car showcased at the Paris Motor Show. The rear now features distinctive "light wings" that add to its modern aesthetic and improve aerodynamics, with the SCx value dropping from 0.84 in the old model to 0.75 in the new one. This design overhaul is part of Citroën's strategy to align with contemporary automotive trends while maintaining its unique brand identity.

Inside, the C5 Aircross promises a spacious and comfortable environment. The vehicle maintains its reputation for comfort, with seats designed to provide excellent support during long journeys. The interior features a new dashboard layout with a large 13-inch central touchscreen, which is the largest ever fitted in a Stellantis vehicle. This screen, combined with a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, centralizes controls but has drawn some criticism for requiring drivers to divert their gaze from the road to operate.

While the previous model boasted three individual, sliding rear seats, the new C5 Aircross opts for a fixed bench seat. However, the rear seats still offer adjustable backrests and a generous amount of legroom, making it comfortable for passengers. The trunk capacity remains competitive at 565 liters, and the rear seats can fold down to expand storage to 1,668 liters, accommodating larger items.

Under the hood, the new C5 Aircross is built on the Stellantis STLA Medium platform, allowing for a range of powertrain options. Notably, Citroën has eliminated diesel options, a move in line with the automotive industry's shift towards electrification. Instead, the lineup includes a micro-hybrid 1.2-liter engine producing 145 horsepower and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant with a 1.6-liter turbo engine and an electric motor, offering a combined output of 195 horsepower. The PHEV boasts an all-electric range of up to 86 km, making it a practical choice for urban commuting.

For those looking for fully electric options, the C5 Aircross will also be available in two electric variants: a 210-horsepower version with a 73 kWh battery, providing a range of 520 km, and a 230-horsepower version with a 97 kWh battery, capable of reaching up to 680 km on a single charge. This extensive range is complemented by fast-charging capabilities, allowing for quick top-ups when needed.

Citroën has emphasized its commitment to sustainability with the new C5 Aircross, incorporating recycled materials into its construction. The vehicle contains 47 kg of plastics and 160 kg of metal parts sourced from recycling, and the batteries for the electric variants are produced in France, further supporting local industry.

Pricing for the new C5 Aircross is expected to start around €35,000, which is competitive within its segment, especially considering the advanced features and technology it offers. This price point positions it below its direct competitors, such as the Peugeot 3008 and Renault Austral, while still providing a robust offering in terms of comfort and technology.

As the order books are set to open in June 2025, with deliveries expected in the last quarter of the year, Citroën is keen to regain market share in the competitive compact SUV segment. The new C5 Aircross aims to attract buyers looking for a blend of style, comfort, and practicality, all wrapped in a package that reflects modern automotive trends.
