As the clock struck 8:30 PM on March 22, 2025, cities across the globe dimmed their lights for Earth Hour 2025, illustrating a united front in the face of climate change. From iconic landmarks to local residences, millions participated in this powerful movement aimed at promoting sustainability and climate action.
In Sarawak, Malaysia, the initiative saw an impressive turnout, with 70 locations—including shopping malls, public buildings, and iconic landmarks—plunging into darkness. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasized that this act serves as a reminder of how small efforts can aggregate into significant impacts. "This commitment must extend beyond just one hour—we must integrate sustainable practices into our daily lives," he declared during the Virtual Earth Hour 2025 joint programme, which streamed live on Sibu Rural District Council’s Facebook page.
The event, themed “Create the Biggest Hour on Earth,” was organized by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) and included participation from 26 local councils. Dr Sim also announced that the Sri Aman District Council would take over as the official host for Earth Hour 2026. Kuching South City Council Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng praised the community's dedication to adopting eco-friendly practices, stating, "From recycling our waste to reducing electricity consumption, we are all committed to making the world a better place by adopting eco-friendly practices in our daily lives." This ongoing commitment reinforces the gravity of climate action in everyday life.
Bangkok also joined the initiative, with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) urging all residents to turn off their lights from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. This included landmark sites such as the Emerald Buddha Temple and the Grand Palace. The BMA’s campaign not only raised public awareness about climate change but also showcased the city's collective spirit in combating this global challenge. The participation from various business sectors underscored the partnership between the public and private pursuits towards sustainability.
The roots of Earth Hour extend back to 2007, when it first launched in Sydney, Australia. Originally a symbolic gesture, it has now evolved into a significant annual event that brings attention to climate issues. "Turning off the excessive lights may seem like a small step, but it symbolizes a commitment towards the reduction of carbon emissions and tackling global warming," shared an unnamed participant, highlighting the broader purpose behind the event.
In India, major cities marked the occasion firmly by switching off their lights at significant sites. New Delhi’s India Gate, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial all observed the hour in solidarity. Likewise, the National Assembly in Seoul darkened its lights to join the global push for urgent climate action.
Earth Hour 2025 transformed into a community festival in Vietnam, where the Ministry of Industry and Trade organized various events to engage the public. They launched an energy-saving run that attracted nearly 2,000 participants. Reflecting on the day’s significance, one participant remarked, "I find this year’s Earth Hour message very meaningful and timely as the world faces climate change and natural disasters. Green transition is the key to a green future.”
In various Vietnamese provinces, activities such as cycling events and public awareness campaigns added to the local celebrations. In Binh Duong, initiatives included the “25 Seconds to Turn Off the Engine” program and flash mob dance competitions to spark interest in energy efficiency and environmental consciousness. Meanwhile, Da Nang engaged in educational campaigns to encourage responsible energy use.
This year, the focus of Earth Hour coincided with UN World Water Day, with a message labeled ‘The Power of Nature,’ aiming to promote the role of natural resources in combating climate change. By turning off their lights, individuals symbolically pledged their commitment to energy conservation and a greener planet.
As the world comes together to observe Earth Hour, it serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility towards sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. While the dimming of lights for one hour may seem minor, it highlights the potential for grassroots movements to impact global challenges.
As individuals, we can further contribute by adopting eco-friendly habits, promoting local sustainability initiatives, and advocating for greater awareness around climate issues. Let Earth Hour inspire lasting change in how we care for our planet.
