Cities Adjust Services After Labor Day Holiday

Ijuí and Blumenau navigate post-holiday service changes and reopening schedules.

As the Labor Day holiday on May 1, 2025, wraps up, cities across Brazil are adjusting their public and private services accordingly. In Ijuí, municipal schools will remain closed today, May 2, 2025, due to a point of optional leave established by the city government following the holiday. This decision affects all municipal educational institutions, while state schools in Ijuí and the surrounding region have the autonomy to decide whether to reopen. However, many of these state schools will also be closed today.

Meanwhile, Unijuí, the local university, will resume activities today, with students scheduled for tests as per the university calendar. This resumption marks a return to academic normalcy after the holiday.

In terms of public services, bank branches, the Correios (Brazil’s postal service), and state departments in Rio Grande do Sul—including the Judiciary, Public Ministry, and Public Defender’s Office—will resume services today after the holiday break. However, agencies like the INSS (National Institute of Social Security) and Receita Federal (Federal Revenue) will remain closed.

Garbage collection in Ijuí will proceed as usual today, following a halt during the holiday. Additionally, local commerce is set to reopen, allowing businesses to serve their customers once again.

In the surrounding municipalities, some local governments will also resume operations today. Municipalities such as Pejuçara, Entre-Ijuís, Santa Rosa, Nova Ramada, Catuípe, Chiapetta, Eugênio de Castro, Santo Ângelo, Condor, and Panambi will return to work. Conversely, Ijuí, Boa Vista do Cadeado, Coronel Barros, Jóia, Bozano, Augusto Pestana, Cruz Alta, Boa Vista do Incra, and Ajuricaba will observe an optional leave today, meaning they will reopen on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The Ijuí City Council will follow suit with an optional leave today, planning to reopen on the same Monday.

In health services, the clinics in Ijuí will not operate today due to the municipal government’s optional leave. Residents requiring services through the SUS (Unified Health System) are advised to visit the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) 24 hours or the HCI (Ijuí Hospital) on-call unit. The Corujão da Saúde, a health initiative, will continue to operate from 1 PM to 7 PM until Sunday, May 4, 2025.

On the electricity front, Demei (the municipal electricity company) will have on-call services available via phone at 0800-051-9200, including WhatsApp support. Ceriluz, another electricity provider, will resume normal operations today.

Shifting focus to Blumenau, the Labor Day holiday also impacts public and private service operations. The city hall will be on-call during the holiday, but services are expected to return to normal today, May 2, 2025. A collective agreement allows local businesses to decide whether to open, leading to a mixed bag of operations. Supermarkets like Bistek, Cooper, and Giassi have confirmed they will open during regular hours.

The Neumarkt and Norte Shopping malls will operate normally, with stores, kiosks, and food and leisure services available from 10 AM to 10 PM. Similarly, Park Europeu shopping mall will also open as usual, although specific locations such as SmartFit and the Federal and Scientific Police will remain closed.

On the public service front, Correios agencies and bank branches were closed on May 1, and there will be no parking inspections today, with parking lots being free for use.

Public transportation in Blumenau will run on a Sunday and holiday schedule, which may affect commuters. Parks such as Parque Ramiro Ruediger, Parque das Itoupavas, and Parque da Artex are open daily, providing residents with recreational options.

Health services in Blumenau will see some facilities open today. The AGFs (Family Health Units) in Garcia, Velha, and Itoupava will operate from 8 AM to 5 PM. Additionally, the remote health service, Alô Saúde, continues to function 24 hours a day, accessible via phone or through the Pronto app.

Despite the interruptions caused by the holiday, both Ijuí and Blumenau are working to ensure that essential services resume in a timely manner, balancing the needs of their communities with the observance of Labor Day. As the weekend approaches, residents can expect a return to their regular routines, with schools, businesses, and public services gradually resuming their operations.
