Chunichi's Kin'ya Tanaka Faces Surgery After Injury

The promising infielder diagnosed with left hand fracture will miss about two months of play.

Chunichi Dragons' infielder Kin'ya Tanaka has been sidelined due to an unfortunate injury to his left hand. On March 1, 2025, during the educational league game against the Kufuhayate team, the 24-year-old baseball player sustained damage after fouling a ball during his fourth at-bat.

Following the incident, Tanaka was quickly taken to hospital for examination, where he was diagnosed with a fracture of the hook of the hamate bone, which is located within the left hand. This type of injury is not uncommon among baseball players, as it can occur during batting due to the impact on the wrist and hand. Chunichi has announced plans for Tanaka to undergo surgery soon, though details about his recovery period are yet to be fully clarified. Initial estimates suggest he could be out for about two months.

Tanaka's performance prior to the injury had been promising; last season, he played 112 games and achieved a batting average of .224, accompanied by two home runs, 23 RBIs, and five stolen bases. Known for his agility, Tanaka has been recognized for running 50 meters in just 5.9 seconds, showcasing his speed on the field. The young talent was drafted as the sixth overall pick by Chunichi during the 2022 draft, and his defensive plays at second base have contributed significantly to the team's performance.

Tanaka's absence will undoubtedly be felt. Team manager Ochiai expressed his disappointment, admitting, “It’s painful to lose him, even if it happened during the game.” Ochiai had planned for Tanaka to be part of the opening day lineup, anticipating his valuable contribution to the Dragons.

Looking back at Tanaka’s career so far, he hails from Kanagawa Prefecture and began playing baseball at the age of eight. During his school days, he made headlines at the high school level, particularly when he led his team to the semifinals at Koshien, representing Tokai University Sugao. He continued his development at Aoyama Gakuin University, where he played from his first year and even made it to the university national team.

The Chunichi Dragons are now left to adjust their roster following this setback, as they prepare to continue their season without one of their promising young stars. Today's game against Hiroshima was canceled due to rain, providing Tanaka with some time to recuperate as he participates in training sessions to maintain his fitness during his recovery.

Fans and players alike will be watching closely as updates on Tanaka’s health and recovery progress are announced. The team remains hopeful for his speedy return to the diamond, as they look to build on their season and compete effectively within the league.

Tanaka's determination and skills have made him a fan favorite and his endeavor to bounce back from this injury is undoubtedly one everyone is eager to support.
