Gadsden’s Christmas at the Falls Ranks Among Top Light Displays Nationwide
Christmas at the Falls, Gadsden’s cherished holiday lights event, has captivated locals and visitors alike and recently garnered national attention. The event, hosted at Noccalula Falls Park and Campground, made Mixbook’s list of “America’s 150 Most Magical Christmas Light Displays,” coming in at 95th place—one of the highest rankings for any North Alabama attraction.
Notably, it shares the spotlight with The Wharf’s Holiday SPECTRA at Orange Beach, ranked 54th, and Mobile’s Bellingrath Gardens’ Magic Christmas in Lights, which placed 88th. This recognition is particularly special, considering Mixbook, known for its photobook services, compiled the rankings after surveying 3,000 families, solidifying the event's status as a family favorite.
According to Mixbook, the Peace, Love & Lights Holiday Light Show, held annually in New York’s Catskill Mountains, secured the top spot this year. Christmas at the Falls brightens Noccalula Falls Park with millions of lights, showcasing dazzling displays throughout the park.
The festivities include a mile-long train ride allowing visitors close access to the light displays, appearances by beloved holiday figures like Santa Claus and the Grinch, and engaging attractions, such as the park’s new animal barn and petting zoo. Mayor Craig Ford expressed pride and gratitude, saying the city is “blessed to be able to steward and preserve” the park. He also acknowledged the commitment of the park’s staff, particularly pointing out Landscape Manager and Administrative Assistant Brandon Stephens and Park Director Christina Richardson, whose efforts bring the holiday magic to life.
“They make magic out of thin air and create lifelong memories for everyone who visits Christmas at the Falls,” Ford remarked.
Richardson echoed the sentiment, noting the honor of making Mixbook’s list. “It’s a huge honor, for sure,” she stated, proud of their hard-earned recognition.
So far this season, the attraction has welcomed about 30,000 visitors—an impressive figure as it tracks higher than previous years, which is particularly encouraging since this year’s display opened earlier than usual on November 22 and will run through January 4.
The record attendance for Christmas at the Falls reached about 150,000 visitors in 2023, yielding $1.1 million, directly benefiting the park. The funds generated have helped finance exciting additions like new electric trains and tracks, as well as contribute to the extensive $11.3 million renovation project at the neighboring campground.
Mayor Ford concluded, saying, “We also must recognize every park visitor because their cost of admission always goes right back to enhancing the park for future visitors to enjoy.”
The admission fees range from $10 to $15, depending on the day, which includes the spectacular train ride through the decorated park. Visitors can also opt for combination tickets for both Christmas at the Falls and Christmas on the Coosa, the city’s ice skating extravaganza situated next to Moragne Park, offering both experiences at a reduced price.
Meanwhile, the St. Jude Church has been enlivened by its Christmas on Seventh Street event, where families gathered for festive fun and community bonding. The St. Jude Women's Guild organized the event, which included several activities such as a pancake breakfast, vendor fair, and kids' entertainment featuring live animals.
Little ones enjoyed engaging activities, including cookie decorating and crafting at the Gingerbread playdough station. Teacher Amanda Robb noted the emotion of the day as she guided her preschool students through musical performances, delighting parents who captured the moments on their phones.
“It’s wonderful to see the kids so engaged and spreading joy,” Robb said, indicating the spirit of togetherness the event brought to the community.
Kristen Young, visiting from Lisbon, tested out the fun Selfie Station set up behind the church, enjoying the whimsical atmosphere created by the day’s activities. With various stands and options within the event, families enjoyed bonding time over pancakes, laughter, and crafts.
While Christmas at the Falls continues to shine brightly as one of the top light displays across the nation, events like Christmas on Seventh Street remind the community what this season is about—coming together to share joy, celebrate traditions, and create lasting memories.
Both events highlight the rich holiday atmosphere infused within Gadsden, providing entertaining options to celebrate the season with loved ones.
