Christina Applegate Battles MS And Shares Heartfelt Reflections

The actress candidly discusses her health challenges as she compares herself to Humpty Dumpty

Christina Applegate has opened up about the struggles of living with multiple sclerosis, likening herself to "Humpty Dumpty" as she reflects on her physical changes during her health battle. The talented actress, known for her roles on Dead to Me and Married... with Children, was diagnosed with MS in the summer of 2021.

The diagnosis took place just as she was filming the final season of Dead to Me, forcing production to halt for several months. At 52 years old, Applegate shared her struggles candidly on her podcast, MeSsy, where she described how the disease has led to muscle atrophy and significant weight gain.

Describing her condition to her podcast co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also battles MS, Applegate said, "I have no muscles in my legs, which I showed you. I look like Humpty Dumpty. My little tiny, weird legs and then my big menopausal belly."

This honest admission highlighted not just physical changes but also her emotional state. "I like being home now because, well, I like being in my bed, but also I don’t want to be in my bed. But once I do go out, I’m happy I’ve done it," she explained.

Aware of her limitations, Christina has created what she calls a "disclaimer" for her friends. She tells them, "If you want to go to lunch, just know — if I say can’t do it, you can’t be mad. It’s my little disclaimer."

Christine is candid about her capacity for physical activity, confessing she isn’t conditioned for her previous level of activity. "My heart starts beating really fast, and I think I’m going to have a heart attack because my heart’s just... the muscle isn’t there,” she explained.

She also revealed the emotional toll her condition has taken on her life, mentioning moments of depression she hasn't faced for years. "I’m trapped in, like, this darkness right now... which I don’t think I’ve felt for years," she candidly shared on her podcast, expressing the fear it instills within her.

Since her diagnosis, Applegate has faced various challenges, including mobility issues and significant weight gain. She indicated to her listeners how overwhelming the changes have been, saying, "You either feel s–tty or you feel less s–tty when you have MS. There’s never like, ‘Oh my God, I’m back to who I was before all this happened!’

Applegate has shared with fans her healthcare experiences, including falling and losing circulation. Her health has significantly changed since being diagnosed, leading to moments when she feels like she’s lost control over her body.

Continuing to navigate the ups and downs of living with MS, Christina explores new activities she can do without risking her health. She loves her home, but she still wishes to engage with friends and acquaintances without the stress of unexpected health issues.

Her close friend told her, "We wake up and take the indicated action," emphasizing the need to adapt to whatever each day might bring. Although Applegate struggles with her condition, she maintains her sense of humor and connection with others as best as she can.

Despite the daily battles she faces, Christina remains dedicated to her craft. Her past experience with cancer only bolsters her will to share her story and inspire others facing their battles.

Over the years, Applegate has frequently reflected on her career and its intertwined connection with her life experiences, both good and challenging. She's developed lifelines through her craft, using her experiences to tell stories many can relate to.

Throughout these challenges, her fans remain supportive and ready to cheer her on. Many have expressed gratitude for her openness and honesty, providing them with hope and inspiration during their own struggles.

Christina Applegate's story is one of resilience amid darkness. The path she is walking is undeniably tough, but her choice to share her experiences helps others know they are not alone.

While she continues to face her MS diagnosis, her strength shines through. Applegate's candor might also encourage others to speak out about their struggles, making it more comfortable to share what might typically go unsaid.

Keeping her head up and facing each day with courage, Christina demonstrates unconditional love for life and connection, not just to her own story but to the stories of many who walk similar paths. Her determination to live authentically raises awareness about living with chronic illness, engaging listeners and viewers alike.

Despite the weight of her challenges, Applegate remains hopeful—she's all about finding the light amid the shadows. Her words resonate beyond her personal experience, leaving us to reflect on the beauty of vulnerability and resilience.
