Chris Wallace Bids Farewell To CNN After Three Years

The veteran broadcaster plans to explore new avenues like podcasting or streaming following his time at the network

Chris Wallace, the veteran broadcaster known for his distinguished career spanning several major news networks, has announced his departure from CNN after just under three years. This decision marks the end of Wallace's tenure, which began amid the doomed launch of CNN's streaming service, CNN+. The service, intended to be a bold new step for the network, was scrapped just weeks after its debut.

Wallace's exit came as no surprise to those who followed the intrigues of network television. He had received contract renewal offers but opted instead to seek opportunities more aligned with the modern media climate, such as podcasting or streaming content. According to several reports, Wallace plainly stated his desire to go 'where the action seems to be' — this sentiment was noted during his conversations with other media outlets.

Network CEO Mark Thompson praised Wallace upon his departure, highlighting his extensive experience across various media. "Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business with a unique track record across radio, print, broadcast television, cable television, and streaming," said Thompson. The CEO expressed gratitude for Wallace's contributions to CNN and wished him well for future endeavors.

Since joining CNN, Wallace had hosted "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?" and led the network's election commentary. Yet, his shows struggled to attract substantial viewership, at times averaging below 100,000 viewers, which is quite low for Sunday evening talk shows. Prior to this role, he was greatly recognized for his work at Fox News, where he hosted "Fox News Sunday" for 18 years. His transition raised eyebrows as his conservative background clashed with CNN's positioning as more of a centrist news outlet.

Among murmurs of internal dissatisfaction, Wallace's reported salary reduction became a focal point of his decision to leave. Sources indicated he was offered significantly less than the $8.5 million he made under the previous CNN leadership. This cut, paired with unaddressed frustrations about the network's direction, likely fueled his desire to pursue an independent path.

The backdrop of Wallace's leave is significant, considering CNN's current financial struggles. With industry outlets indicating upcoming layoffs and potential salary cuts across the network, Wallace's departure could symbolize the wider challenges facing traditional networks as they navigate the shifting media environment. The streaming wars and shifting consumer preferences have upended conventional news delivery; Wallace's move seems to be influenced by these very realities.

This decision reflects larger trends within the media industry, particularly the rising prominence of personalities like Joe Rogan and the success of unfiltered media formats. Rogan’s podcasts, for example, have reshaped the narrative on how news is consumed, prioritizing long-form discussions over traditional televised interviews. Wallace, who humbly acknowledged his own limitations compared to such prominent figures, expressed interest in exploring where he could have more reach and impact.

Despite his storied career, Wallace's move is about more than just transitioning jobs; it's indicative of the growing recognition among journalists of the need to adapt to the changing media consumption habits of audiences. With viewers increasingly favoring content on platforms like YouTube and various podcasting services, his aim to pivot from traditional frameworks reflects both personal preference and the broader evolvement of the industry.

He’s expected to remain with CNN until the end of the year, wrapping up his responsibilities with the network. While his departure marks another noteworthy change for CNN, Wallace’s next steps will undoubtedly be closely watched by both fans and critics alike as he looks to redefine his role within the media sphere.

Wallace's storied career demonstrates resilience and adaptability, starting as a newspaper reporter and reaching high-profile status across various news platforms. With political journalism always at the forefront of his work, his next move could continue to influence the way political discourse is shaped and presented.

Indeed, as Wallace leaves CNN, the transition signals not only personal change but also encapsulates the current state of affairs where even the industry's veteran personalities must navigate the new terrain.
