Chris McCausland Challenges Low Expectations For Disabled People

The Stand-Up Comedian and *Strictly Come Dancing* Star Emphasizes the Need for Greater Awareness Around Disability

On the hit BBC television show Strictly Come Dancing, comedian Chris McCausland, who is visually impaired, has sparked significant conversation after making poignant comments about societal expectations of people with disabilities. Following his captivating performance during the latest episode, McCausland emphasized how commonly held views often underestimate the capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

At 47 years old, McCausland became the first blind contestant of the popular dance competition, showcasing not just his dancing ability, but also his unique perspective on disability. He performed to “Instant Karma!” by John Lennon, during which he engaged the audience by creating a stunning visual effect. The routine featured the lights briefly dimming, with McCausland balancing his dance partner, Dianne Buswell, on his shoulders. This moment was described as both creative and moving, earning them enthusiastic applause from spectators.

"There's no doubt we are surprising people, there's no doubt we are surprising ourselves," McCausland explained, highlighting how their performance challenged typical expectations. He went on to address the prevalent low expectations society often places on people with disabilities. He recounted experiences where people express astonishment at basic tasks he carries out, such as using public transport or handling his phone.

McCausland articulated these sentiments during his appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, saying, "There are quite low expectations of people with disabilities by quite a lot of people out there... Sometimes, you’ll come down some steps to a taxi outside and they’ll say: 'Ooh, wow, how did you do the steps on your own?'" This reflects what he sees as outdated views on disability, which may stem from people’s lacking exposure to disabled individuals accomplishing everyday tasks.

He continued, expressing his hope is to help broaden perspectives on what individuals with disabilities can achieve. "Expectations can be quite low because maybe people’s ideas of disability can be antiquated, or maybe they’ve just got no exposure, so this is, in a way, quite extreme, isn’t it? But I hope it goes some way to stretching people’s ideas of what is possible,” McCausland stated, underscoring his desire to reshape the narrative around disability.

Following the dance, he received high scores from the judges, earning 33 points. Judge Craig Revel Horwood described the moment of darkness during the routine as “poignant,” and fellow judge Shirley Ballas praised McCausland’s bravery, stating, "You have no fear, you come out every week with your heart on your sleeve, and you give us 100%." This recognition reflects the audience’s growing appreciation for not only his talent but also the courage it takes to perform under such challenging conditions.

"I think I’m good at masking my fear... it’s terrifying to do it on live TV, when you’ve got no previous experience of it," he noted. Despite the challenges, McCausland feels accomplished each week they perform, expressing delight at making it through the rounds.

Chris McCausland’s visual impairment stems from retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary condition leading to gradual degeneration of the retina. This condition has had significant impacts on his daily life but has not deterred him from pursuing his career or challenging artistic avenues.

The reaction to McCausland's performance has highlighted how such platforms can amplify voices and narratives often overlooked. His words serve as both inspiration and motivation for others, particularly for those living with disabilities. It opens dialogue about society's preconceived notions and the importance of fostering an inclusive community.

With many applauding his approach and heartfelt expressions, McCausland has taken on the role of not just contestant but advocate, using his platform to impact public perception positively. His story as part of Strictly Come Dancing is not only about the joy found on the dance floor, but also about resilience, breaking down barriers, and inspiring change.
