Chris Dobey Ready To Shine At 2025 Premier League Darts

North East player excited to compete alongside top competitors and thrill his home crowd.

North East darts star Chris Dobey is excited to announce his inclusion in the 2025 Premier League Darts line-up, which was revealed on Monday. Dobey, who hails from Bedlington, is set to join reigning world champion Luke Littler, along with prominent names like Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphries, Rob Cross, Gerwen Price, Stephen Bunting, and Nathan Aspinall. The tournament kicks off on February 6, making its first stop at the SSE Arena in Belfast.

"I’m buzzing to be part of it; it’s another step in the right direction for my career," Dobey expressed with enthusiasm. Often referred to as 'Hollywood', he noted the thrill of competing against elite players week after week, stating, "You play at the big, massive arenas, and it's one everyone keeps an eye on. It's similar to the World Championships. Everybody wants to be watching the Premier League." This opportunity not only signifies personal growth for Dobey but also acts as affirmation for his hard work and dedication.

The Premier League Darts will feature matches every Thursday evening until May, spanning across various locations including Glasgow, Dublin, and concluding at the O2 Arena in London on May 29. Each night promises intense competition as the eight players compete for glory and substantial prize funds.

Despite the excitement, the announcement drew criticism from some darts fans who were disheartened over the exclusion of other renowned players like World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker and UK Open champion Dimitri van den Berg. "It is a hard one to take. I was in the same situation last year where I felt I played pretty well consistently yet was just overlooked," shared Dobey, acknowledging the disappointment among peers. He believed De Decker deserved inclusion, noting, "If he had gone a couple of steps farther in the World Championships, he would have been involved. But I’m sure they’ll be back tougher and stronger than ever."

Competing within this prestigious framework is notable for Dobey, who will showcase his skills at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle on March 27. "Playing in front of my home crowd is unbelievable; it’s something special, and I’m definitely looking forward to it," Dobey remarked. To amplify the occasion, he plans to revert to his walk-on song, the Geordie anthem 'Local Hero', bringing nostalgia and fanfare to the night.

Across the tournament, the line-up reflects both performance and audience draw. The decisions made by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) were influenced by the players’ ability to engage crowds. PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter elaborated on the selection process, stating, "We want people on the edge of their seats. We want them to enjoy their darts. This year’s line-up features players with proven track records of electrifying performances, ensuring fans will have much to cheer for."

Returning champion Luke Littler will defend his title alongside world number one Luke Humphries, Rob Cross, and Michael van Gerwen, who all earned automatic entry based on their positions within the PDC’s Order of Merit. The wildcard entries, which include Dobey, Stephen Bunting, Gerwen Price, and Nathan Aspinall, highlight not just talent but also crowd-pleasing charisma.

This year’s Premier League promises to weave through the UK and Ireland, culminating its tour in London, with each event expected to attract thousands of passionate fans. The ticket sales have reportedly surpassed expectations, indicating significant anticipation for the event. With vibrant venues lined up for the tournament, fans are eager for thrilling showcases of darts excellence.

Match nights will incorporate knockout tournament formats, with players accumulating points throughout the season based on their performance. The spotlight on these matches will not only provide fierce competition but will also spotlight rising stars and legendary figures alike. The community surrounding darts continues to expand, genteely reflecting the interests and enthusiasm for the sport.

At its core, the Premier League Darts unites players and fans and celebrates the sheer excitement of the game. With Dobey’s inclusion and his admirable interactions with fans and former players, the tournament is set to shine even brighter. The anticipation for the upcoming matches signifies not just competition but shared moments of joy among players and fans alike.

All eyes will be fixed on the players, and as the event approaches, the excitement builds not just for the thrill of darts, but for community, support, and the unforgettable atmosphere. For Dobey, this is merely the next chapter of what promises to be both exciting and fulfilling, as he is ready to step back onto the big stage, where he truly belongs.
