Choshi City Prepares For Mayoral Election And By-Election

Incumbent mayor Shinichi Koshikawa seeks fourth term amid challenges

The Choshi City mayoral election and a by-election for the city council are set to be announced on April 20, 2025, as the current mayor, Shinichi Koshikawa, seeks a fourth term in office. The election comes at a time when the city faces significant challenges, including population decline and financial difficulties.

Voting will take place on April 27, 2025, at 16 designated locations throughout Choshi, a coastal city in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The ballots will be counted on the same day, starting at 9:10 PM at the city gymnasium, where results will be made public shortly thereafter.

Koshikawa, 63, who has been in office for three terms, is expected to face stiff competition from three other candidates, all running as independents. Among them is Mitsuyasu Ishigami, 79, a former city council member, who is making his first bid for the mayoral seat. Another contender is Yoshiaki Ishikawa, 71, a former superintendent of education, also entering the race for the first time. Rounding out the group is Hisanaga Kuromaki, 65, a former professor at Chiba University of Science.

With a registered voter base of 46,669 as of March 1, 2025, the upcoming election is poised to be a critical moment for Choshi. Candidates are likely to engage in lively debates focusing on how to address the city’s pressing issues, including its declining population and economic challenges.

The mayoral candidates are expected to outline their visions for the future of Choshi, with Koshikawa aiming to leverage his experience and established leadership to secure another term. His challengers, meanwhile, will likely bring fresh perspectives and new ideas to the table, appealing to voters who may be dissatisfied with the current administration.

As the election date approaches, the candidates will ramp up their campaigns, reaching out to the community to discuss their plans and gather support. The outcome of this election could significantly shape the future direction of Choshi, making it imperative for voters to consider their options carefully.

In addition to the mayoral race, the city council by-election will also take place, with five candidates preparing to contest for the single available seat. This by-election adds another layer of importance to the electoral process, as new council members will play a vital role in supporting or challenging the mayor’s policies.

As Choshi prepares for this pivotal election, residents are encouraged to engage in the democratic process and make their voices heard. The upcoming weeks will be crucial for candidates as they work to connect with voters and articulate their visions for a better Choshi.
