A chlorine gas leak at the Elypso leisure pool complex in Deggendorf, Bavaria, has triggered significant emergency response efforts early Thursday morning. This unfortunate event took place between 6 and 7 AM, according to Johann Dollmaier, head of corporate communications and marketing for the Deggendorf municipal utilities.
The police confirmed the situation, stating it was attributed to user error within the technical facilities of the building, which led to the release of a small amount of chlorine gas used to treat pool water. Luckily, the public was not present at the time of the incident, but approximately 25 staff members were inside the facility. Five of these individuals were taken to the hospital as a precaution due to mild respiratory irritation.
Emergency services descended on the scene, with around 150 responders mobilized to assist with the containment of the situation. Dollmaier noted, "The building is currently undergoing intense ventilation processes" to mitigate any remaining gas levels.
Authorities took immediate action, issuing warnings to local residents via the Nina warning app shortly after 8:30 AM. Locals were advised to stay indoors and close all windows and doors as the situation unfolded. The police, along with specialized units from the traffic police, commenced investigations to assess the incident thoroughly.
Tim Rothenwöhrer, the city's fire inspector, reassured the public stating, "The warning for the population was precautionary and is no longer necessary". Indeed, as of 9:30 AM, there was no immediate danger to the community. Residents of the Natternberg district had initially been on high alert, but it was soon determined the situation was under control.
Following the incident, the Elypso complex will remain closed for Thursday, with plans for when it might reopen still uncertain. Dollmaier confirmed, "We will keep the public informed of developments via our website and social media channels." Meanwhile, fire departments and experts continue to work on safely removing the hazardous substance from the building.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with chemical substance handling, even during routine maintenance activities. The response from local emergency services showcases the importance of quick action and community safety measures. While the immediate threat has been neutralized, the staff's health and safety remain the top priority as they recover from the incident.
