Chloë Grace Moretz Confirms Engagement While Carson City Faces Tragedy

New Year's Day 2025 brings personal milestones alongside serious public safety incidents.

Chloë Grace Moretz appears to have confirmed her engagement to long-term girlfriend Kate Harrison as the actress celebrated the New Year with a heartfelt message on Instagram. On New Year’s Day, Moretz shared a recap of 2024, posting photographs from memorable moments, one of which hinted at her engagement through matching diamond rings displayed on their fingers. "Happiest New Year," she wrote, expressing gratitude for the year gone by. "So thankful for what this year has brought. The people, the places, our families, our health, our love. Wishing all of you a peaceful start to this new year."

Moretz and Harrison have been romantically linked since December 2018, when they were spotted enjoying dinner together at Nobu, Malibu. The couple’s relationship has drawn the interest of fans, particularly as more details emerge about their commitment to each other.

Meanwhile, Moretz has been gaining attention for her past role on Prime Video's The Peripheral, which revolves around the discovery of links to alternate realities within a technologically advanced future. Despite initial excitement surrounding its renewal for a second season back in February 2023, the series was abruptly cancelled by August of the same year. The decision was reportedly influenced by the concurrent writer and actor strikes affecting Hollywood, leaving many fans of the show disappointed.

Reflecting on the cancelled series, Moretz previously shared her hopes for its continuing story. "I think there's just a huge way to build out the world, and to, I think, get them out of just London and get us to other cities," she noted. "What does the rest of the future world look like?"

On the other side of the country, New Year's Day brought tragedy to Carson City, Nevada, where the sheriff’s office released footage of a fatal officer-involved shooting. According to reports, the incident began shortly after 10:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve when deputies responded to Old Clear Creek Road following reports of domestic disturbances.

The suspect, identified as 64-year-old Michael Bright, had already fled the scene when law enforcement arrived. Subsequently, he sent threatening text messages indicating his intention to confront officers. Just before midnight, Bright returned to the scene and opened fire on deputies and the victim’s residence without warning.

Deputies quickly returned fire and wounded Bright, who then barricaded himself inside his vehicle. The chaotic exchange of gunfire was captured on body camera footage, clearly depicting the emergency and the dangers involved during those tense moments. Negotiations continued until approximately 12:17 a.m. when Bright exited his vehicle once again, leading to another series of gunshots as deputies shouted warnings about the presence of his firearm.

Only after the situation was contained did officers approach Bright's body, discovering a 9mm handgun and ammunition beside him. If he had survived, Bright would have faced several serious charges, including attempted murder and assault with deadly weapons against peace officers. The Carson City District Attorney’s Office has since taken on the investigation to review the officer-involved shooting incident.

These contrasting events—Moretz’s celebratory engagement and the stark reality of violence—painted a complex picture for the start of 2025. While many were welcoming the new year with joy and hope, others faced the somber realities of such incidents. It serves as a reminder of both personal triumphs and the challenges communities continue to encounter.
