Chinese Universities Launch AI Courses Using DeepSeek Models

Chinese universities are embracing the future of technology with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) courses founded on the breakthrough models from DeepSeek, a startup igniting waves of enthusiasm both locally and internationally. This initiative is part of China’s broader strategy to bolster scientific and technological innovation within its educational frameworks, aiming to catalyze new sources of growth for the world’s second-largest economy.

The startup, headquartered in Hangzhou, has garnered significant accolades, particularly from Silicon Valley specialists, who equate its AI models, DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, to the most advanced technologies offered by industry giants like OpenAI and Meta Platforms. This recognition highlights the competitive edge and ingenuity of Chinese tech.

Shenzhen University, located in southern Guangdong province, announced its launch of AI courses based on DeepSeek earlier this month. The university aims to equip students with skills centered on core technologies as well as address pressing societal issues such as security, privacy, and ethics. A spokesperson from the university remarked, “The course will explore how to find the balance between technological innovation and ethical norms.”

Similarly, Zhejiang University has commenced special DeepSeek courses this February, reinforcing its commitment to modern education applicable to current technological advancements. Shanghai University of Transportation has integrated DeepSeek’s tools to refresh its AI learning programs, as conveyed through its official WeChat channel.

These educational developments fall under the auspices of China’s inaugural national action plan, released earlier this year, aiming to construct “an education strong nation” by 2035. This plan emphasizes the creation of “high-quality education systems” easily accessible to all citizens, ensuring not only inclusion but also excellence on par with leading global educational institutions.

The impetus behind such widespread adoption of DeepSeek is not merely academic; it aligns with the national agenda to advance China’s standing as a tech powerhouse. Educational institutions are reacting quickly to integrate these innovative models, with many faculty members and administrations eager to leverage AI's potential, which could bring transformative changes not only to educational systems but also the broader socio-economic fabric of the country.

DeepSeek, characterized as akin to China’s “Sputnik moment,” emerges amid rising national pride and ambition surrounding home-grown technological achievements. The startup's models promise not only efficiency but also the economic viability of AI, making it appealing amid growing global competition.

Beyond the classroom, DeepSeek’s influence stretches to various sectors, with major telecommunications companies including China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom integrating these AI models primarily within their cloud services. Others, like Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo, are also incorporating DeepSeek technology, indicating the company’s burgeoning position within the industry.

The application of DeepSeek’s technology transcends consumer electronics. Automakers, particularly, have seized the opportunity, with over 20 manufacturers, including BYD and startups like Leapmotor, planning to develop smart vehicles equipped with DeepSeek’s AI. These collaborations suggest substantial changes not just to product design and functionality, but also to the ways companies interact and serve their clients.

Notably, the surge of interest around DeepSeek and its models reflects broader anxieties about job security, exacerbated by the AI-driven changes within various workspaces and government roles. Rumors of AI “civil servants” utilizing DeepSeek's R1 model have provoked discussions on social media platforms, leading to trends questioning the future of traditional jobs within the civil service and other sectors considered secure.

A Twitter-like hashtag emerged as people pondered, “Will DeepSeek take my job?” This sentiment has generated over seven million views on the platform Weibo, reflecting the deep-seated concerns amid growing technology adoption.

Despite worries, local government officials clarified their deployment of AI assistants as tools meant to assist rather than replace human roles, emphasizing the necessity of human oversight. These digital assistants aim to expedite bureaucratic processes and streamline public service delivery, demonstrating the efficiency benefits AI can bring to environments typically mired by red tape.

AI expert Meng Qiang from Tsinghua University underscored the cost-effectiveness of DeepSeek’s models as well as their proficiency with Chinese language applications, making them advantageous for domestic use. According to him, there’s potential for significant advancements within government operations through the intelligent integration of AI technologies.

While apprehension surrounding AI's impact on job markets continues, it is also worth noting the possibilities for new jobs and roles created within these technological contexts. Researcher Wang Bang at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences affirmed this growing complexity, indicating, “The transformation toward integrating AI doesn’t simply mean job losses; it’s rather indicative of the evolution and emergence of new opportunities, albeit gradually.”

This tension between innovation and job security, investment and uncertainty reflects both the challenges and the promise of embracing AI as institutions respond to quickly changing landscapes.
