Research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlights the dual nature of this exodus: "pull factors" from China and "push factors" stemming from US policy decisions, particularly the controversial China Initiative.

From 2010 to 2021, there was a notable increase by 75% in departures among US-based Chinese scientists, many indicating they felt unsafe due to fears of investigations tied to their heritage.

According to the findings, nearly 68% of scientists of Chinese descent who were initially based in the US relocated back to China, which marks a remarkable rise from 48% just over ten years ago.

The life sciences field bore the brunt of this trend, witnessing over 1,000 scientists departing back to China within just the last year recorded.

Many individuals surveyed expressed despair over their sense of welcome and safety, with around 72% reporting they did not feel secure as academic researchers, fearing judgment based on their Chinese origins.

This unsettling environment makes it difficult for scholars to retain interest in federal grant applications, evidently exacerbated by legal concerns stemming from the investigations.

One noteworthy case involves MIT professor Gang Chen, whose reputation suffered severely due to espionage charges associated with the China Initiative, charges which were later dismissed.

China has historically been one of the most influential sources of scientists and engineers for the US, contributing to 17% of the doctoral degrees awarded annually.
