The Chicago Cubs have bolstered their roster by signing veteran infielder Justin Turner to a one-year deal worth $6 million. The move, confirmed by multiple sources, marks another strategic decision as the Cubs prepare for their upcoming season.
Turner, 40, who played last season with the Blue Jays and Mariners, brings significant experience and hitting prowess to the Cubs' enforced roster. Known for his solid bat, Turner logged 11 home runs and recorded 55 RBIs over 460 at-bats, finishing the season with a slash line of .259/.354/.383.
Despite his age, Turner showcases remarkable versatility, primarily known for his proficiency at third base. Reports indicate he will not only serve as insurance at the hot corner but also step in as a backup at first base, offering flexibility throughout the lineup.
Jesse Rogers of ESPN emphasized, "Turner’s versatility was a key factor in Chicago’s decision to sign him." With significant playoff experience, he can provide guidance to younger players adjusting to the pressures of major league baseball.
The Cubs pivoted to sign Turner following disappointing negotiations with other key third-base options, including Alex Bregman, who recently signed with the Boston Red Sox. The Cubs are currently evaluating their options at third base, with 23-year-old prospect Matt Shaw considered the frontrunner for the position. Shaw, selected as the No. 19 prospect by MLB Pipeline after impressive minor league stats, is seen as the future of the position. Yet, he lacks the big-league experience which makes Turner’s signing even more significant.
Shaw had impactful numbers last season, notching 21 home runs and 71 RBIs, alongside 31 stolen bases, slashing .284/.379/.488. This sets the stage for Turner, who will be able to guide Shaw as he navigates his initial steps to the majors.
Even though Turner is not expected to be the primary third baseman, his presence allows for increased stability for the Cubs. Also, Turner’s arm strength has been assessed poorly, rated 565th out of 705 players since 2020, demonstrating his limited capability to execute difficult throws. That said, the Cubs plan to minimize his time at third base, primarily using him as backup when emergencies or significant injuries arise.
