Chew Foundation Hosts Vibrant Lunar New Year Celebration

The Tehama County Fairgrounds will come alive with culture, food, and community spirit this weekend.

RED BLUFF, Calif. — The Helen and Joe Chew Foundation is set to host a vibrant celebration for the Chinese Lunar New Year this weekend, marking the Year of the Snake. The event aims to share Chinese culture and history with the local community.

Jessica Chew, granddaughter of Joe Chew, shared her family's deep-rooted history within the area. Her ancestors were among the original settlers of Red Bluff's Chinatown, arriving back in 1865. They initially opened a traditional herbal medicine shop and later established 'Ming Terrace,' which operated until the 1970s. "A big purpose for our non-profit is as we look at the past and understand our history during the gold rush, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, how do we reflect on those issues today, how we bring people together, how do we recognize our common goal, common interest and also represent diversity," Jessica said.

Bruce Chin, Jessica's uncle, offered his insights as well, adding, "People have a lot more in common than differences and also we are all part of the fabric of this community and the nation." This sentiment of unity and inclusiveness is at the heart of the celebration, as the foundation works to rejuvenate the history of the Chinese community and celebrate its contributions.

The Luna New Year festivities will kick off on February 2, 2025, starting at 11 a.m. at the Tehama County Fairgrounds located at Tyler Jelly Hall. Due to inclement weather concerns, the event has been moved indoors to accommodate all attendees. Guests can look forward to a range of festivities, including delicious food, various vendors, live performances, and much more, showcasing the richness of Chinese culture.

The community event not only serves as entertainment but also as a reminder of the importance of togetherness and cultural expression. Jessica noted the foundation's commitment to making the celebrations meaningful for those who attend, as they reflect on the history and current issues facing the Chinese community. "We want to engage with everyone and show how vibrant and integral our culture is," she emphasized.

Celebratory events like these are more than just traditions; they are opportunities for education and cultural exchange. The Chew Foundation's celebration of Lunar New Year is poised to draw crowds and unite people from all walks of life, fostering connections and mutual respect among diverse community members.

Overall, the Lunar New Year celebration promises to be not only a festive occasion but also one of historical significance, reflecting on the strides the Chinese community has made over the years and the importance of embracing all cultures within America.
