ChatGPT Launches On WhatsApp, Expanding AI Access

OpenAI's latest move enables WhatsApp's 2.7 billion users to interact with AI easily via messaging and voice calls.

ChatGPT can now take queries via WhatsApp after OpenAI widened the availability of its hugely popular AI chatbot. The launch allows any of WhatsApp’s 2.7 billion users around the world to chat with the AI tool, with people in the US also able to call a toll-free phone number – 1-800-ChatGPT – for voice conversation.

This integration is part of OpenAI’s ambitious plan to make artificial intelligence more accessible. “We care a lot about continuing to reduce barriers for more people to try out AI and see what it can do for them,” said Antonia Woodford, a product manager at OpenAI. “We’re really excited to bring ChatGPT to you through two familiar channels: calling and WhatsApp.”

WhatsApp users interested in chatting with ChatGPT can simply add the number +1 1800 242 8478 to their contacts. Users can call for the voice feature, which offers 15 free minutes of conversation each month to anyone dialing from a US number.

While the ChatGPT chatbot on WhatsApp does not require users to log in to an OpenAI account, it is limited to text conversations and operates with data only up until September 2021. Importantly, users cannot add ChatGPT to group chats, and any misuse of the service against OpenAI’s terms will result in account blocking. “This is an experimental way to talk to ChatGPT, so availability and limits may change,” said an OpenAI spokesperson.

For those seeking more extensive features, including customized tools and higher operational limits, they are encouraged to continue utilizing ChatGPT directly through their accounts.

This launch puts ChatGPT in direct competition with Meta’s own artificial intelligence, which the company is incorporating across its array of applications. With this strategic move, OpenAI is poised to attract new users to its services and promote engagement with AI on familiar platforms.

By making ChatGPT available on WhatsApp, OpenAI has taken a significant step toward democratizing AI access, allowing users to experience the technology's potential directly from their messaging app of choice. The initiative not only highlights the growing influence of AI but also emphasizes the importance of integrating advanced technology seamlessly within everyday tools.
