Charlie Dalin Triumphs At 2024 Vendée Globe

Boris Herrmann faces challenges but completes the race, finishing twelfth after 80 days at sea.

The 2024 Vendée Globe has concluded, making history with unprecedented records and remarkable performances from the skippers. This edition saw sailors navigate the treacherous waters of the world’s oceans, each battling not only the challenges of the sea but also personal hurdles on their solo journeys around the globe.

Charlie Dalin emerged victorious, crossing the finish line first after 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes, and 49 seconds aboard the Macif Santé Prévoyance. His remarkable performance set him apart, as he notched up impressive speeds and surpassed previous records, solidifying his status as one of the top competitors of this grueling race.

“This vast gap does not reflect the true level of the best IMOCA sailors among themselves,” Dalin remarked, addressing the differences caused by varying weather conditions encountered by the leading competitors and those behind them, according to the report by BBC.

Boris Herrmann, sailing Malizia - Seaexplorer, faced significant challenges throughout the race, finishing twelfth after 80 days, 10 hours, 16 minutes, and 41 seconds at sea. Herrmann’s ordeal included mechanical failures and harsh weather, but he maintained his fighting spirit even when falling behind. He initially led for half an hour shortly after the start but faced setbacks including replacing his autopilot hydraulic cylinder within the first 24 hours.

Reflecting on his experience, Herrmann stated, “I had only problems since Cape Horn, but I managed them and did not give up. It was an extremely intense race.” This marks Herrmann’s second completion of the Vendée Globe, showcasing his resilience and determination to continue competing at high levels.

Another standout from the race was Yoann Richomme, who finished second on the Paprec Arkéa, followed closely by Sébastien Simon on Groupe Dubreuil. Both sailors demonstrated excellent skill and strategy, carving out impressive performances to secure their podium positions.

Richomme, echoing Dalin's sentiments, acknowledged the impact of weather on race dynamics, stating, “The level here is similar to the previous races. Seb Simon has really improved.” This camaraderie among the top skippers reflects the mutual respect developed through fierce competition.

Romain Attanasio also finished strongly, taking 14th place aboard Fortinet - Best Western. Despite encountering several challenges, including being dismasted just months prior to the race start, Attanasio successfully completed his third Vendée Globe. “I am really starting to feel the end is coming,” he said near the finish, highlighting the toll of the arduous race.

With over 80 days of racing, many other skippers also faced difficulties. The amended route demands and challenging conditions led to retirements, including defending champion Yannick Bestaven and certain competitors like Louis Burton, who had to abandon due to technical failures.

“We’ve learned so much during this race,” praised Herrmann, as he shared reflections on the intense conditions and the dedication required for such endurance events. His comments were echoed by other skippers who had to navigate mechanical challenges and weather-induced hurdles, bringing attention to the endurance and resolve necessary for such events.

Throughout the race from start to finish, emotions ran high among participants and supporters alike. The sense of community is palpable, as sailors cheered for each other as they crossed the finish line, with fans lining the shores of Les Sables-d'Olonne to witness the celebrations.

Despite the struggles faced during the race, there's optimism for future events. Each sailor, including Herrmann, expressed their desire to return and improve their standings, with many already eyeing the next Vendée Globe planned for 2028.

The conclusion of the race revealed the stories of triumph and struggle, metabolic experiences, and deep introspections as each participant emerged from their solitude on the oceans. The next chapter promises more exhilarating experiences as they prepare for their next solo adventures.

With 13 skippers completing the race, the achievements of Justine Mettraux stood out, making her the first woman to finish among the top ten, setting her own women’s record. This edition of the Vendée Globe has celebrated sporting excellence, resilience, and the spirit of adventure.

Reflecting on their passage through the Southern Ocean and balancing the extremes of elation and despair, these sailors have woven incredible narratives during their time on the sea. From Dalin's historic triumph to Herrmann’s hardships, every story adds to the rich legacy of the Vendée Globe, forever marking their names in the annals of sailing history.
