Chandigarh Implements Emergency Measures Amid Rising Tensions

Local administration enforces closures and safety protocols in response to potential threats from Pakistan

Chandigarh is on high alert as tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, prompting the local administration to implement a series of emergency measures aimed at ensuring public safety. Following a series of drone attacks and missile threats from Pakistan, the Chandigarh Administration has taken decisive steps to prepare for potential emergencies.

On May 9, 2025, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nishant Kumar Yadav ordered the closure of all markets, shopping malls, hotels, and restaurants in the city from 7 PM until 6 AM the next day. This measure is part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks associated with the ongoing conflict. Essential services, such as medical stores, will remain open during this period, but all non-essential establishments are required to comply with the closure order.

In addition to the closure of businesses, the administration has also mandated that all lights in government and private buildings, banks, ATMs, religious places, petrol stations, bus stands, railway stations, and parks be turned off from 7 PM. This initiative is designed to minimize visibility during potential aerial threats and enhance the safety of residents.

Schools in Chandigarh have been ordered to remain closed, and a decision regarding their reopening will be made on Monday, May 12, after assessing the situation. Coaching centers for students up to class 12 are also closed until further notice, with the administration emphasizing the importance of safety during this tense period.

In light of the increased security concerns, the Chandigarh Administration has established a 24-hour operational control room to respond swiftly to any electrical crisis or emergency situation. The control room can be reached at 0172-2787200, and its responsibilities have been assigned to SDE Rudesh Kumar. Special preparations have been made to ensure that street lights can be turned off quickly during a blackout, with councilors receiving training for this purpose.

Additionally, the administration has urged Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Market Welfare Associations (MWAs) to assist in disseminating accurate information and countering any misinformation that may arise during this crisis. DC Yadav has expressed appreciation for the cooperation of residents in these efforts, highlighting the importance of community involvement in disaster management.

Meanwhile, the Indian government has taken steps to address misinformation on social media platforms. Following attempts by Pakistan to target Jammu Airport, the government ordered Elon Musk's social media platform X to block over 8,000 accounts in India, which included international news outlets and various digital entities. This move aims to prevent the spread of false news and animosity among the public during these sensitive times.

HCLTech, a major IT company, has also responded to the rising tensions by instructing its employees in Chandigarh, Gurugram, and Noida to work from home. This decision came after drone and missile attacks were reported near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, raising security concerns. The company will continue to assess the situation and may extend the work-from-home arrangement depending on government advisories.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during blackouts and avoid using generators or inverters, as this may compromise safety. The administration has emphasized that during a blackout, citizens should refrain from using torches or phone lights, as this could help prevent enemy forces from identifying targets.

In a further effort to bolster community safety, the Chandigarh Administration has called for volunteers aged 18 and above to join as Civil Defense Volunteers. A recruitment and training camp will be held at Tagore Theatre in Sector 18 on May 10, 2025, at 10:30 AM. This initiative aims to enhance disaster management capabilities and ensure that citizens are prepared to assist one another in emergencies.

As part of the ongoing safety measures, the administration has also postponed the National Lok Adalat scheduled for May 10, 2025. Citizens are encouraged to check for updates on the official website of the District Legal Services Authority (UT Chandigarh) and to remain vigilant during this period of heightened alert.

The siren system has been activated to warn citizens of potential aerial attacks. The red alert siren, which lasts for five minutes, indicates an immediate threat, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid balconies or rooftops. If the threat subsides, a green alert siren will signal that normal activities can resume.

Authorities have deployed security forces at key locations and sensitive buildings throughout the city to maintain public safety. Shops remain open, and there is no shortage of essential items, but residents are reminded to follow all safety advisories and remain cautious.

In summary, as tensions rise between India and Pakistan, the Chandigarh Administration is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of its residents. From closing non-essential businesses to activating emergency protocols and urging community involvement, the administration is committed to navigating these challenging times with vigilance and preparedness.
