Celebratory Firing Incidents Prompt Police Action At Greater Noida Weddings

After two injuries and one fatality, police enforce strict guidelines to prevent gunfire at wedding celebrations.

Celebratory firing incidents during weddings in Greater Noida have sparked significant public concern and prompted the local police to take decisive action to prevent such occurrences. Recently, two waiters were injured by gunfire during a wedding celebration, just days after another tragic incident where a toddler lost his life.

On February 25, during the festive atmosphere at the Ashirwad Marriage Home, Shivam Kumar, 23, allegedly opened fire as part of the wedding celebrations. The two victims, identified as Santosh Kumar, 25, and Ishwar Dayal, 23, suffered serious injuries from stray bullets. Police officials reported they were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital and are now recovering. An FIR was registered against Kumar under section 109, indicating attempted murder, and he was arrested shortly after the incident.

This incident marked the second case of celebratory gunfire within just eight days. Prior to this, on February 16, police reported another disturbing event when celebratory fire led to the death of two-year-old Aaron, who was watching the wedding procession from his family's balcony. The police stated they arrested two individuals linked to this tragedy and underscored the public’s growing concern over safety during these festive occasions.

Following the recent uptick in celebratory firing incidents, the police have issued specific guidelines aimed at curtailing such dangerous practices. DCP Shakti Mohan Avasthy stated, "Police have issued guidelines to all banquet halls prohibiting any display of weapons during weddings and functions." This measure is aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing repeat occurrences of similar incidents.

The police have mandated several safety measures, including the prohibition of firearm display and consumption of alcohol without permissions. They are insisting on the installation of CCTV systems for monitoring activities during events. Officers noted, "If any incident related to the display of firearms or celebratory firing is reported, legal action will be taken against both the firearm holder and the banquet hall operator." These guidelines are now being enforced across all wedding venues within the Greater Noida jurisdiction.

Communities have expressed mixed feelings about these celebrations. While many see the practice of celebratory firing as traditional, the consequences have led to increased calls for reforms. Reports indicate strong sentiments against the continued presence of firearms at social functions, fueling the demand for stricter regulations.

The local police, recognizing the risk to public safety, have initiated broader communication with banquet operators, reinforcing the seriousness with which they intend to handle these matters. Each operator has been asked to adhere strictly to the newly instituted protocols to mitigate risks associated with celebratory firing.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police BS Vir Singh, the incidents clearly highlight the need for stringent measures: "Considering the two back-to-back firing incidents seriously, we have made guidelines for the banquet and marriage halls.” The police are also working to educate guests on responsible behavior during weddings, underscoring the goal of making such events safe for everyone.

For now, police efforts remain focused on ensuring compliance with these new regulations, aiming to guarantee safety at matrimonial celebrations. The recent injuries and tragic death have cast shadows over what should be joyous occasions, prompting communities and authorities alike to reconsider the cultural norms surrounding celebratory gunfire.

The situation continues to evolve as local officials respond to the community's concerns and the pressing need for change following these alarming events. The commitment from the police to implement and enforce these regulations reflects the determined effort to protect both individuals and families during these important social events. The hope remains firm among the community members and officials alike: for future weddings to be remembered for the joy they bring, rather than marred by gunfire.
