Across Japan, cat lovers are gearing up for one of the most anticipated days of the year: Cat Day, celebrated on February 22. The significance of this day is highlighted by the numerous events, exhibitions, and themed products lined up to honor our feline friends.
Established by the Pet Food Industry Association and the Cat Day Executive Committee back in 1987, Cat Day has evolved, gaining popularity both domestically and internationally. Interestingly, February 22 is recognized as Cat Day primarily in Japan, whereas August 8 marks World Cat Day globally. The growing economic impact of cat ownership—now surpassing dog ownership since 2016—has led to what is referred to as ‘Cat Economy,’ which was estimated to be valued at approximately ¥1.969 trillion as of 2022, according to Professor Masahiro Miyamoto from Kansai University.
This year, the celebrations are set to be especially vibrant. From February 23 to 24, Tokyo Big Sight will host the 5th Lovely Cat Festival. This event will feature over 50 companies showcasing various cat products. Attendees can also enjoy expert talks and witness live cat shows, making it a haven for cat enthusiasts.
On February 22, Shibuya will turn its focus onto the Black Cat Festival, taking place at Gallery 33, where attendees can admire photography exhibitions featuring black cats. A portion of the entrance fee— ¥500—will support the medical costs for rescue and regional cats, making it not just an event for fun but also a noble cause. Following this, from February 23 to 24, the Cat Forest Exhibition will present feline-themed art and photography.
Shibuya’s Loft will transform its space with the Shibu-Nyan Fest 2025, which features cat-themed cooking tools, sweets, and merchandise. Notably, one can create cat-shaped treats using unique baking kits and enjoy feline-packaged coffee and teas.
For those who might not attend the events, Kanro Confectionery has introduced new cat-themed gummy candies—Candy Meow Gummy—featuring adorable packaging with kitten faces. Available flavors include ‘Energy Grapefruit’ and ‘Cat Punch Grape Soda,’ certain to delight any cat lover with their playful designs.
Meanwhile, special promotions are happening at JR Nippori Station, as they celebrate Cat Day with cute cat-themed snacks and goodies. A similar fair will also take place at Ecute Shinagawa Station until February 24, enriching the commuting experience with delightful feline treats.
For those more interested in the cultural aspects, the 20th Cat Festival at Yushima Shrine will bestow cat-themed goshuin (shrine stamps) to patrons who collect at least one stamp from the festival’s stamp rally, from February 22 to March 15. This initiative allows participants to carry home not just memories but also beautiful cat-themed souvenirs.
On the television front, BS TV Tokyo will temporarily rename itself ‘BS Cat Tokyo’ on February 22, airing specials and regular programs focusing on everything feline, including the beloved Rental Cat film. This initiative emphasizes how heavily ingrained cats are within Japanese culture, reflecting both their companionship and the joy they bring.
On the municipal front, Gunma Prefecture is launching the My Cat Number initiative, which encourages proper indoor cat rearing as part of their updated animal welfare regulations. This innovative move encourages pet owners to declare their pet’s details to promote responsible ownership and will offer participants specially crafted badges featuring their cat’s likeness.
Finally, the highlight for cat aficionados will undoubtedly be the TICA-certified Cat Show at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center on February 22, running from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. This event will feature purebred cats being evaluated for beauty, health, and breed characteristics. With free admission, the public is encouraged to come and experience these wonderful animals up close. Besides the cat judging, special prizes and promotional items, including smart cleaning solutions for pet owners, are part of the event offerings.
With various activities, products, and community engagements, Cat Day promises to be a heartfelt celebration across the country, delighting all feline lovers and ensuring the day is full of joy and community.
