Carlisle United are thrilled to announce the re-signing of striker Cedwyn Scott on a one-and-a-half-year deal from fellow League Two side Notts County for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old returns to Brunton Park, marking his second spell with the club after previously making seven appearances during the 2020/21 season.
Scott's footballing odyssey began at Huddersfield Town's youth setup, followed by stints at Dundee, Berwick Rangers, and Forfar Athletic. He first caught the eye at Hebburn Town, netting 21 goals before joining the Blues on trial, which culminated with him signing for Carlisle.
After his short tenure at Carlisle, Scott found his scoring touch at Gateshead, where he tallied 24 goals over 45 appearances. His remarkable form earned him a move to Notts County, where he played 61 games and scored 17 goals. Notably, Scott played a pivotal role in helping the Magpies gain promotion back to the English Football League, famously scoring the winning penalty against Chesterfield during the dramatic 2023 National League play-off final at Wembley.
Head Coach Mike Williamson, who previously collaborated with Scott at Gateshead, expressed his enthusiasm about the player's return. "Cedwyn is a player I've worked with before so we know the quality he possesses. He's at a stage in his career where he's hungry to progress and kick on, which aligns perfectly with the profile of player we're seeking," Williamson remarked. He also highlighted Scott's technical prowess, stating, "He’s got fantastic technical ability in front of goal, he’s really excited to be here, and we’re all looking forward to working with him."
Sporting Director Rob Clarkson shared similar sentiments, saying, "We're delighted Cedwyn has chosen to join us. We know we need to score more goals and we’re confident he will help us do just this. We’d like to thank Notts County for their cooperation and help in getting this deal done."
Scott's career, though, hasn’t been without its challenges. This season has seen him make just 13 appearances and score twice for Notts County due to mental health issues, necessitating some time away from the game to seek help. Despite this, his last competitive appearance coincided with the early December fixture against Walsall.
His return to Carlisle signals not only the club's reliance on his skills but also his own quest for redemptive form. Scott expressed eagerness to re-establish himself at Brunton Park, where he aims to leave his mark once again with his scoring ability.
Previous to his time at Carlisle, Scott made waves when he joined Gateshead, connecting with the fans and the team with significant goal-scoring prowess, which caught the attention of several scouts across the league.
The supporters at Carlisle United welcome back Scott, with high hopes for what this season may hold for him and the rest of the team. His experiences, burgeoning talent, and motivation to advance will be invaluable as Carlisle United faces the challenges of the upcoming League Two fixtures.
Notts County also released a statement acknowledging Scott's contributions during his tenure, expressing gratitude for his role, especially during the promotion season, and wishing him all the best with his new chapter at Carlisle.
With Scott back at Carlisle United, fans and management alike are optimistic about what lies ahead, hoping his previous success can translate back to the team as they strive for improved performance this season.
