The Gazette publishes daily obituaries, honoring the lives of community members. Recently, two beloved individuals from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marilue Bowman Watkins and Ruth E. Duede, were remembered for their rich legacies and contributions to their families and communities.
Marilue Bowman Watkins was born Mary Louise Bowman on December 17, 1928, in Quinter, Kansas. She peacefully passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 96, surrounded by her family. A passionate music educator, Marilue graduated cum laude from McPherson College, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music. She married her beloved husband, Stanley Watkins, on June 6, 1952, and the couple enjoyed 72 harmonious years together until his death in September 2024.
Throughout her life, Marilue dedicated herself to music and education, influencing countless young musicians through private piano instruction and directing various church choirs. Her community involvement was extensive; Marilue contributed to several organizations, including the League of Women Voters and co-chairing the Sunday Evening Meals Program at First Presbyterian Church. Notably, she also served as a pre-school teacher at the Jane Boyd Community House.
She is survived by her son Kendall, daughter Lynn, and five grandchildren. Following her wishes, Marilue donated her body for medical research at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine, advocating for education even after her passing. Teahen Funeral Home is overseeing her arrangements, requesting contributions to Orchestra Iowa, which reflects her deep appreciation for the arts.
Meanwhile, Ruth E. Duede, affectionately known as Babe, also passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 6, 2025, at Mercy Hospital after struggling with lung disease and pneumonia. Born on December 31, 1933, Ruth was the youngest of nine children and lived a life characterized by care and community spirit.
She worked for 19 years at Killian’s candy counter and ran daycare from her home for many years. Ruth first married Paul Mefferd before finding enduring happiness with Wayne Duede, with whom she shared 44 joyful years until his passing in 2020. A passionate baker and craftswoman, Ruth delighted her family with her culinary skills and enjoyed nature by avidly watching squirrels and birds.
Ruth's family includes her daughters; Cindy, Teresa, Joni, Lisa, and Kristin along with Wayne's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her services are set for February 11, 2025, at Central Church of Christ, with Rev. Darren Johnson officiing. The family is accepting contributions for activities at the Irving Point Assisted Living Facility and the Central Church of Christ, ensuring Ruth’s spirit of giving continues to impact her community.
