Cádiz Carnival 2025 Lights Up Cultural Spirit

Antoñito Molina shines as pregonero, paying tribute through heartfelt performances.

The Carnival of Cádiz has once again captivated audiences and participants alike, culminating in the dynamic performances of the COAC 2025. This year's festival was particularly special, with Antoñito Molina taking center stage as the pregonero, heralding the spirit of Carnival with heartfelt music and tribute to his beloved Cádiz.

On the eve of his much-anticipated pregón, Molina was buzzing with excitement, having prepared four or five exclusive songs crafted for this unique moment. These songs, he explained, are not merely performances but personal notes to Cádiz, reflecting his deep connection to the city. "Cádiz deserves to have these songs recorded and preserved for future generations," he expressed during our interview, emphasizing the emotional weight of the occasion.

Molina's proactive engagement leading up to the Carnival has been evident. He momentarily paused his concert tours since January, focusing on preparing for the pregón. During his lively interview, he shared, “I haven’t been sleeping much these days. I spend about four hours pretending to sleep.” His commitments also include upcoming concerts planned for Mexico right after the festivities, significantly enhancing his already busy schedule.

The pregón was not just about Molina; he collaborated with renowned local artist Jesús Bienvenido, whose input helped shape this year's theme and presentation style. "I approached Jesús for his perspective; I wanted someone with the artistic vision to make the pregón even more special," Molina shared. Indeed, Bienvenido's mastery was seen when he dedicated his pasodoble during the finals to the injustice surrounding the unsolved murder of young malagueño, delivering poignant commentary on social issues facing Andalucía.

The finals of the Carnival showcased the rich diversity of performances from seasoned veterans to fresh talents, all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere. The event not only coincided with Andalusia Day but was marked by passionate renditions and costumes rich with social and political commentary. The audience was treated to powerful performances, including Bienvenido’s tribute to the late Hassan Al-Asad and the challenges of maintaining cultural venues. "Cádiz is known around the world because of our songs. People appreciate our streets and beaches through our performances," he stated, illuminating the deep bond between culture and community.

The COAC, running since January 24 and reaching its climax on February 28, was adorned with attendees waving Andalucía flags, celebrating their identity and cultural pride. Many passionate performances included renditions of tangos, chirigotas, and comparsas, commemorated the local heritage, building excitement as the clock ticked closer to the announcement of winners.

After hours of entertainment, Domingo Acedo officially announced the competition results at dawn on March 1. The evening saw performances from across the spectrum, with notable placements awarded to various groups. The first prize for coros went to "El Gallinero", followed closely by “Cádiz, el Show.” Comparsas were taken by "Las Ratas," which achieved first prize, alongside “El Cementerio” and “Los del Otro Barrio.” The chirigotas witnessed “Los Calaítas” receiving the top honors, with surprises rounding out the scores.

Notably, the atmosphere inside the Gran Teatro Falla reflected the spirit of the Carnival where every note was celebrated, and creativity flourished. Performers expressed their gratitude for the support they received throughout the night. "Being here tonight has brought back glorious memories, and we’re thankful to our audience for embracing us once again,” reflected José Guerrero Yuyu, whose return after 14 years has been warmly applauded.

With artists pushing the boundaries of performance art, places like Cambalache Jazz Club being recognized during the event served as testimonial nods to the community's cultural and social fabric. The recognition of longstanding figures and establishments highlights the spirit of resilience ingrained within the Cádiz Carnival.

Undoubtedly, this year's Carnival transcended mere performance; it became a festival rooted deeply within the cultural and emotional zeitgeist of Cádiz. The dedication to honor the city through song and narrative revealed the underlying sentiment shared among artists and attendees alike.

While the spotlight shone brightly on the winners, the Carnival experience embodies the collaborative essence of its community, celebrating creativity and identity.

The next Carnival promises to echo the joy, the challenges faced, and the unwavering spirit of the people of Cádiz, holding space for both nostalgic remembrance and progressive celebration of Andalucía's rich and dynamic culture.
