CATL Plans Major Expansion Of EV Battery Swap Stations

Leading EV battery manufacturer aims for 1,000 stations across China to boost EV adoption.

China's leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, CATL, has unveiled its ambitious strategy to revolutionize the EV market through the expansion of its battery swapping infrastructure. The company announced plans on Wednesday to establish 1,000 battery swap stations across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao by next year, with future aspirations to expand the total to 10,000 stations collaboratively with partners.

The rapid evolution of EV technology is at the forefront of the global shift to sustainable transportation methods, and CATL aims to capitalize on the current momentum. The power of battery swapping lies not only in speed—promising to replace depleted batteries within mere minutes—but also its role as a convenient alternative to lengthy charging times. During the press briefing, CATL’s founder and chairman, Robin Zeng, emphasized the company’s commitment to creating “a sound ecosystem” to drive innovative breakthroughs as they transition away from gas-powered vehicles.

Drivers can expect to swap their batteries within 100 seconds at CATL’s upcoming stations, surpassing the time it typically takes to refuel a gas tank. Zeng remarked, “The most important thing is the standardization of battery size,” reflecting how this standardization will simplify infrastructure and operations. With over 107,500 orders already secured for its new “Choco” SEB batteries from more than 30 companies, CATL is poised for significant growth.

The swap technology centers around two differentiated Choco-SEB battery packs. The #20 model is suitable for small vehicles and hatchbacks, whereas the #25 model caters to larger cars. The #20 LFP battery boasts up to 42 kWh of capacity, providing up to 400 kilometers (248 miles) of driving range, with options for both LFP-based and NMC chemistry variants.

Pricing for battery swapping services is set to start at 369 yuan ($51) per month for the #20 pack, allowing drivers to access up to 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles) of travel. For those requiring unlimited mileage, the cost extends to 469 yuan ($64). The competitive pricing coupled with CATL’s vast experience positions it as a strong contender against other battery swap networks, such as NIO's, which has over 2,700 stations and plans to scale up to 5,000.

The rapid adoption of battery swap technology is not without challenges. Jing Yang, director at Fitch Ratings, noted possible industry hesitance to adopt standardized battery packs due to concerns over supply chain control. He explained how manufacturers might be reluctant to fully embrace battery swapping, though they might assess its impact on sales and explore partnerships with CATL or NIO to reduce operational costs.

Fleet vehicles, such as taxis and buses, are expected to be the initial target for CATL’s battery swapping strategy. Utilized primarily on predefined routes and typical models, fleets offer the opportunity to test and streamline battery swap practices. Wang Wubing, who drives for Didi, shared his experience utilizing CATL’s stations to maximize efficiency and minimize wait times for passengers, though he acknowledged the higher cost when compared to traditional charging options.

CATL's expansive vision aligns with broader trends pushing the auto industry toward cleaner energy solutions. The surge of EVs on roads globally demands infrastructure solutions like battery swapping stations, which can significantly ease the transition by alleviating anxieties about charging durations. This development reflects broader initiatives to accelerate EV adoption among consumers. “I don't see it becoming mainstream,” noted Lei Xing, auto market analyst, “but I do see it becoming part of the infrastructure.”

Despite the pressing need for standardized systems, advancements within the battery swapping domain hold great potential to reduce typical EV refueling times. Presenting alternative options—like improved home and public charging methods—CATL aspires to carve out its share of the market by 2030 for battery swapping alongside home and public charging stations.

The future remains uncertain, of course, with technological refinements and market adaptability determining how battery swapping will integrate within the burgeoning EV ecosystem. Nevertheless, CATL’s initiative signifies pivotal advancements toward more accessible electric vehicle experiences. The company’s proactive approach, alongside its partnerships, anticipates bolstering the capabilities of the overall EV sector.
