The Princess of Wales has received a new honour following her recent battle with cancer. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has named a rose after her, called Catherine’s Rose, to highlight the healing power of nature. This initiative aims to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, supporting vital cancer care and research.
Catherine’s Rose, a floribunda variety bred by Harkness Roses, features coral-pink petals and is said to have a delightful fragrance reminiscent of mango and Turkish Delight. The RHS has indicated that this rose will thrive in various settings, including mixed borders, hedges, large containers, and rose beds, making it a versatile choice for gardeners.
This honour comes after Kate Middleton, known as Princess Kate, completed a course of preventative chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer in March 2024. In September of that year, she announced that she had finished her treatment, and in January 2025, she joyfully revealed that she was in remission. The announcement of her remission followed a surprise visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital, where she was treated.
Clare Matterson, the director general of the RHS, expressed the significance of Catherine’s Rose, stating, “As well as supporting the incredible work of The Royal Marsden, Catherine’s Rose will raise awareness of how nature and gardening can help to heal. We know how important this message is as every day we see how accessing nature and being outside is vital for our health and happiness.”
Matterson also praised Harkness Roses for their work in breeding this special rose, which she believes will bring joy to gardeners and help sustain pollinators. “It’s a really special rose,” she added.
Dame Cally Palmer, chief executive of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, highlighted the impact of the rose sales, stating, “As a specialist cancer centre, The Royal Marsden’s mission is to ensure every patient has the care and support they need to achieve the best outcome and patient experience. Every rose sold will help The Royal Marsden establish a unique training programme for clinical teams across the country in prehabilitation and rehabilitation techniques which make such a difference to patient care.”
Starting Friday, May 9, 2025, Catherine’s Rose will be available for pre-order on roses.co.uk and rhsplants.co.uk. A bare root rose will cost £29.99, while a potted plant will be priced at £34.99. There will be a limited supply of 15,000 Catherine’s Roses available this year, and for every plant sold, £5 will be donated to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
