Catalonia Faces Heavy Rainfall As Alert Issued

Meteocat warns of potential flooding and severe weather conditions across the region this week

The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has issued a yellow alert for intense rain across 25 regions as of April 15, 2025. Initially anticipated to be a localized event affecting only the southern Terres de l’Ebre and the Girona Pyrenees, the warning has now expanded to cover nearly the entire western half of Catalonia, excluding only the Val d’Aran and Cerdanya. Meteocat has stated that over 20 liters of rain per square meter could fall within just half an hour in several regions, raising serious concerns about potential flooding.

The yellow alert will remain active until 2 PM on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. According to Meteocat forecasts, the most intense rainfall is expected to occur between 2 PM and 6 PM on April 15. Regions such as Montsià, Baix Ebre, and Segrià are among those at risk. The alert has been issued in response to the arrival of the Atlantic storm Olivier, which has already begun to impact several areas of Catalonia.

As the day progresses, the weather is expected to deteriorate further, with widespread rain anticipated across much of the community. The forecast indicates that while the morning may start with scattered clouds and some sunshine, by the afternoon, significant rainfall will cover almost the entire region. This shift in weather patterns is attributed to the increasing instability brought on by the storm.

In addition to the rain, there is a possibility of thunderstorms and even hail, particularly in the northern and interior areas of Catalonia. The weather conditions are expected to lead to localized flooding, especially in vulnerable areas. Thus, the Meteocat has urged residents to take precautionary measures, including avoiding unnecessary travel during the peak rainfall hours.

On April 16, the situation is expected to improve slightly, with the alert level being reduced to a level 1 for certain regions. However, some areas, particularly in the northern half of the country, may still experience rain, albeit at a more moderate intensity. By Thursday, April 17, sunny weather is predicted to return, with temperatures expected to rise as high-pressure systems move in.

Barcelona, in particular, is bracing for significant rainfall on April 16, with a 100% chance of precipitation and an expected accumulation of 15.5 mm. The city has been advised to remain vigilant, as the rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, creating hazardous conditions.

As of April 15, Barcelona is experiencing a partly cloudy day with a 40% chance of rain, but the situation is set to change dramatically the following day. Temperatures are forecasted to range between 11°C and 16°C, with winds from the northeast contributing to the chilly atmosphere.

The rain is expected to ease by April 17, with a significant drop in the probability of precipitation to just 20%. This improvement will be welcomed by residents eager for clearer skies and warmer temperatures.

In light of the unpredictable weather, the Meteocat continues to monitor the situation closely. The public is encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of local authorities, especially regarding travel and safety precautions. With the potential for sudden weather changes, preparedness is key.

As Catalonia faces this challenging weather, the importance of community awareness and readiness cannot be overstated. Residents are reminded that while not every area will experience the same intensity of rainfall, the overall risk of flooding and dangerous conditions remains high. Thus, maintaining vigilance and preparedness is crucial during this period of meteorological instability.

In summary, the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya has taken proactive measures to alert the public about the impending rain and potential hazards. As the storm Olivier continues to influence weather patterns, the focus will be on ensuring safety and minimizing risks associated with heavy rainfall. The situation will be closely monitored, and updates will be provided as necessary to keep the public informed and safe.
