Cat Day Celebrated Across Japan With Fests And Treats

February 22 marks the annual celebration of feline friends with festivals, unique products, and community activities nationwide.

February 22 is celebrated as Cat Day, recognized for its homophonic tie to the sound of cats meowing, "Nyan, Nyan, Nyan." Across Japan, numerous events are taking place to honor feline companions, showcasing the country's deep cultural affection for cats. From unique festivals to specially crafted treats, these celebrations highlight the significance of cats not just as pets but as cherished members of households.

One of the standout events is the "Shinobuyama Cat Festival" held at the historic Shinobuyama mountain area of Fukushima City. This festival, which began as a grassroots initiative by cat lovers, celebrates its one-year anniversary with various activities on February 22. Participants can bring photos of their beloved cats to the "Cat Happiness Prayer Ceremony" at Ken Gokoku Shrine, where they pray for their pets’ well-being. According to Ryohei Yamao, chairman of the organizing NPO “Street Fukushima,” the festival has drawn surprising crowds and highlighted the region's allure. "Cats are one of the many attractions of Shinobuyama and we hope to encourage more people to visit," he said.

On the same day, the town of Marumori, also known as the "Town of Cat Gods," will host its "Cat God Festival," featuring local cat statues and shrines scattered throughout the town. This year's festival includes guided tours and crafts centered on cat themes. Traditionally, Marumori has had strong ties to silk farming, where cats were revered for their rodent-catching skills. Shunichiro Ishiguro, director of the Murata Town Historical Future Museum, aims to educate attendees about the historical significance of cats when he speaks at the event.

Transforming shopping experiences, stores like Okayaman Honpo are hosting "Cat Festivals," where specially crafted cat-themed delicacies such as cat paw-shaped marshmallows and various sweets will be available. Shoko Toyonari, the reporter covering the festival, noted the wide array of handmade cat goods from nine local artisans, emphasizing the creativity and passion behind the products.

Another highlight for Cat Day enthusiasts is the "Cat Day Bag" from KALDI Coffee Farm, which has gained popularity with its whimsical cat-themed merchandise. The bag features adorable cat embroidery and various surprise items inside, and this year, luck-based tickets were distributed for purchase, making it even more sought after.

Meanwhile, special promotions are happening across stores, including discounts on cat-themed products such as those available at Tonkachi store. Customers can find up to 22% off various items from renowned brands like Lisa Larson during the three-day sale starting February 22. This event reflects the increasing commercialization of Cat Day, often dubbed "Neko Economics" by local media.

The phenomenon isn't just limited to festivals and promotions; it's estimated by Professor Katsuhiko Miyamoto from Kansai University, the economic impact of cat-themed merchandise and events could rival the financial boost experienced during major global events like the Tokyo Olympics, estimated at around 2.9 trillion yen.

With additional activities planned, including cat-themed workshops, local markets featuring cat products, and even special cat-shaped foods, the excitement for Cat Day continues to grow year after year. It is clear this day is not only about celebrating cats but also about uniting communities, boosting local economies, and indulging the shared love for these furry companions.

From cat idol events to themed food fairs, Cat Day is enveloping Japan’s cities and towns with joy as people from all walks of life come together to express their love for these cuddly creatures. Whether it’s through attending festivals, partaking in themed shopping, or enjoying delicious cat-inspired treats, February 22 transcends mere celebration; it fosters community spirit and affection toward these beloved animals.
