If it were to be made today, the filmmakers have suggested there would be significant changes to the cast.
Fiona Weir, the casting director for Love Actually, has recently opened up about her views on potential casting changes. Reflecting on the film's release two decades ago, she indicated, “I think if we were doing it today, Richard [Curtis, the director and screenwriter] would write it very differently. Twenty years on, it’s a different country, it’s a different world, a lot has changed.”
One key change Weir proposed is to transform Hugh Grant's role as the Prime Minister to be played by a female. “The first thing is I would cast a female prime minister,” she said, even naming Adjoa Andoh from Bridgerton as the perfect fit for the role.
This conversation isn't new. Writer and director Richard Curtis has previously voiced regrets about the film’s outdated humor and its lack of diversity. He admitted to feeling “unobservant and not as clever as I should have been” and openly expressed his discomfort with certain aspects of the film. “There are things you would change, but thank God society is changing. My film is bound to feel out of date,” he noted, reflecting on the film's cultural standpoints.
Weir echoed Curtis’ sentiments, lamenting certain remarks about McCutcheon's character which she and Curtis feel are no longer appropriate. “Of course, there are things I would rather weren’t included,” she stated, highlighting the specific commentary on McCutcheon’s physicality. Curtis himself has also mentioned wishing those certain lines weren’t part of the script, referring to them as humorous at the time but now realizing they're inappropriate.
Despite the controversial aspects, Weir praised the film for its enduring emotional core. “What does hold up is the emotion, it’s completely authentic. Love is all around—it’s not always seen,” she said. She believes the film remains timeless because it captures sincere feelings with genuine performances, stating, “It’s joyous and celebratory.”
Richard Curtis's unique touch on Love Actually helps it resonate with audiences, but as the world evolves, so too does the way we interpret and critique such films. “It was done with complete lack of cynicism, which is Richard. He is completely without cynicism,” Weir reiterated.
