Carnival Princes Claim Keys At Rathaussturm Events

Festivities bring communities together through laughter and tradition as mayors yield power during carnival celebrations.

The annual Cleve Carnival has once again taken center stage as local mayors dutifully handed over the symbolic keys of their towns to their carnival counterparts during the exuberant Rathaussturm events held across multiple towns. This lively tradition not only marks the start of the peak carnival season but also showcases the humorous rivalry between local politicians and the jubilant carnival societies.

Beginning with Goch, where Mayor Ulrich Knickrehm could not resist the charm of the enthusiastic revelers of the IPK Pfalzdorf. Dressed to the nines, with balloons and vibrant banners decorating the town hall, the atmosphere was electric. Knickrehm, who valiantly tried to hold onto power, was soon swept away by the celebratory spirit as carnival princesses and their garden of dancers took to the streets. "If I've learned anything over the past ten years, it's to expect the unexpected from the Pfalzdorfers!" he remarked, illustrating the tradition's deeply rooted community engagement.

At precisely 12:12 PM, Tulpenprinzessin Tina II of Bedburg-Hau executed her winning strategy after engaging the audience with fun competitions, rapidly snatching the town's wooden key from Mayor Stephan Reinders. Despite the unorthodox timing, the jovial princess declared, "Now the jesters have the say!" The atmosphere was infectious, with hundreds of onlookers celebrating her victory.

Soon after, the festivities continued across different venues, including Kranenburg, where local heroes Prince Christian and his dancers led the charge against Mayor Ferdi Böhmer and his team. The crowd cheered as games—including quizzes and dance-offs—ensued. Böhmer humorously revealed, "Don’t worry, we’ll let you win as always," showing the friendly nature of the rivalry. Remarkably, the carnival group won the key after thrilling competitions and festive entertainment.

Meanwhile, the Kleve event saw thousands celebrate as Karnevalsprinz Tim “der Rockende” triumphed over both the local mayor Wolfgang Gebing and local politicians. The streets buzzed with excitement and spectators lured by colorful costumes and delectable treats, reflecting the local culture's homey feel. "We've been preparing for this moment as we draw nearer to Rosenmontagszug, the pinnacle of our carnival celebrations!" stated one enthusiastic onlooker.

Notably, the involvement of Belgian participants added international flair as they paraded alongside their Klever counterparts. The celebration garnered participation from approximately 80 enthusiastic revelers from the Belgian partner city of Ronse, whose rich traditions offer delightful cross-border exchanges and deepen community ties.

At the Kleve Rathaus, the politics turned playful as the mayor and other local representatives donned outrageous costumes, such as chimney sweeps and American football players, each carrying playful undertones related to their sports and political backgrounds. The atmosphere encouraged friendly banter and competitive spirit—typical of the carnival season.

"We anticipated needing some strategies to secure our power back,” Mayor Gebing joked, showcasing the camaraderie between the entertainers and the political leaders. Political participation not only highlights their willingness to engage with the community but also shows they can enjoy the festivities just as much as the locals.

Even Kranenburg’s festivities had gotten extraordinarily thrilling, with the mayors and carnival princes competing against each other for not only the fun of it but to uphold the jovial tradition. Returning to the topics of community involvement, as the festive season approaches, towns like Kranenburg adopted fun rules for the carnival season—eliminated formalities, enforced dress codes, and insisted on ‘smile support’ for all costume-wearing citizens visiting the Rathaus.

Across all events, common themes emerged: Tradition shapes the community engagement, humor prevails over political differences, and vibrant costumes add layers of joy. Carnival enthusiasts from all surrounding areas contribute to the merry chaos, where everyone is invited to be part of the festivities.

And as the celebrations progress, it’s evident: the power dynamics between mayors and carnival leaders, though light-hearted, hold significant cultural weight. They reinforce community spirit, engage citizens, and celebrate their unique identities as proud members of their towns.

This fulfilling tradition is set to continue, culminating with the grand finale of the Rosenmontagszug, where the merged excitement of politics and carnivals ignite new revelries, ensuring the joy of the season pervades all corners of the towns.
