Cardinal Dom Sérgio Reflects On Pope Francis's Legacy

The archbishop of Salvador praises the simplicity and impact of the late pontiff's teachings and gestures.

Cardinal Dom Sérgio da Rocha, the archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia and primate of Brazil, held a press conference on Monday, April 21, 2025, to reflect on his relationship with Pope Francis following the Pope's death at the age of 88. Dom Sérgio emphasized the profound impact of Pope Francis's teachings and gestures on both the Catholic Church and the wider world.

In his remarks, Dom Sérgio highlighted that the legacy of Pope Francis extends well beyond the confines of the Church. “The figure of Pope Francis and his legacy go far beyond what we can express in the Church,” he stated. “I can say that the teachings and gestures of Pope Francis resonated greatly in the Church and in the world, not only for their internal implications in the life of the Church but also for the ethical, religious, and political significance of his teachings, what he did, and what he taught us.”

One of the key points raised by Dom Sérgio was Pope Francis’s preference for a simpler lifestyle, a stark contrast to the opulence often associated with the papacy. “The very choice of the name Francis already expressed this simplicity,” he noted, referencing the Pope's decision to reside in Casa Santa Marta, a modest guesthouse in Vatican City, rather than the traditional papal apartments.

Dom Sérgio also recounted the last interaction he had with Pope Francis, which was through a phone call and a note. This communication occurred when the Pope was already facing serious health challenges. He reflected on how the Pope’s simple manner captivated the world and how his actions spoke volumes about his commitment to a life of service.

“Francis always sought a Church that was more faithful to Christ and left a legacy to be followed,” Dom Sérgio remarked. He believes that the next pontificate will inherit not just the example set by Francis but also the hope he instilled. “Certainly, the new pontificate will receive this beautiful hope that the Pope left us, and the challenge to carry it forward,” he added.

During the press conference, Dom Sérgio underscored Pope Francis’s concern for global issues, especially those related to countries in conflict. “His constant appeal for peace was evident. He offered his sufferings for peace in the world. He was recognized as a builder of bridges, not walls—a pilgrim of peace,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, Dom Sérgio noted that the Pope’s spiritual strength served as an example of perseverance. “The spiritual strength of the Pope is an example of persistence for us. This teaches us that we cannot measure efforts in our evangelizing mission,” he said.

Looking ahead, Dom Sérgio mentioned that the cardinals are awaiting official communication regarding the next steps following the Pope's passing. He anticipates that the wake will begin on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, with the burial scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025. The conclave to elect a new pope is expected to take place in about 15 to 20 days.

As the Church prepares for this transition, Dom Sérgio called for prayers for the late Pope. “At this moment, the most important thing is prayer for the Pope,” he stated, emphasizing that what occurs in the conclave is ultimately the action of God. He expressed confidence that the Holy Spirit will guide the Church through this time of uncertainty.

In conclusion, Dom Sérgio's reflections on Pope Francis provide a poignant reminder of the late pontiff's enduring influence on the Church and the world. His commitment to simplicity, peace, and service has left an indelible mark, inspiring followers to continue his mission of love and compassion.
