Cape Town City FC salvaged their pride with a much-needed draw against TS Galaxy after enduring four consecutive losses in the Betway Premiership. The match, held at the Athlone Stadium on March 5, 2025, ended 1-1, halting the slump and giving the Citizens what they needed to regain some momentum moving forward.
The hosts began the game with energy, eager to start strong after their recent struggles. Venezuelan forward Darwin Gonzalez created early opportunities for the team but failed to convert with his half-volley attempt just minutes after kick-off. TS Galaxy, on the other hand, wasn’t going to sit back. Versatile player Mpho Mvelase threatened to take the lead with his impressive effort, forcing Cape Town City goalkeeper Darren Keet to make a save.
It was Gonzalez who managed to break the deadlock on the half-hour mark, finding the net with a beautifully constructed finish. His goal seemed to set the stage for City to build on their advantage.
But just nine minutes later, TS Galaxy leveled the score through midfielder Mlungisi Mbunjana, who took advantage of second ball left by the defence during a corner kick to finish from close range.
Despite the setback, Cape Town City continued to push for another goal. A golden chance came around the ten-minute mark before half-time when youngster Siphamandla Dondolo, showing promise, aimed for the goal from Nathan Fasika’s corner but missed, sending the shot wide.
Midway through the second half, City introduced Thulani Serero, who made his much-anticipated debut after joining the club recently. He replaced Fortune Makaringe, adding fresh legs and optimism to the squad.
Both teams had subsequent opportunities to secure the victory but were unable to capitalize. Notable was Keagan Dolly of TS Galaxy, who squandered what should have been a straightforward chance, dragging his delivery wide of the goal.
The match ended with both teams settling for one point each. An important takeaway for Cape Town City was the return of players key to their lineup, including the influential Lorenzo Gordinho, who came back from suspension.
This draw not only served to break the losing streak for Cape Town City but also showcased the continuing effort the team is making to climb up the Premiership table.
The confirmed line-ups featured Cape Town City with Keet, Dondolo, Gordinho, Idumba, Nyama, Mokotjo, Makaringe, Domingo, Darwin, Soukouna, and Rhodes. The bench included Oliaro, Amato, Petrus, Ziba, Nodada, Francis, Aphane, Serero, and Witbooi.
