Canal Sur Prepares For Exciting Spring Bullfighting Season

The network continues to celebrate local culture with live broadcasts of bullfights and the Carnival Colombino.

Canal Sur is gearing up for an exciting spring season with the announcement of its programming dedicated to bullfighting and cultural events, featuring the return of the Circuito de Novilladas de Andalucía. This national novillada circuit will breathe life back to various venues across the autonomous community, showcasing six full novillades between March and May. The final performance is set for April 25, headlined by renowned matador José Luis Pereda.

The live broadcasts will be transmitted through Canal Sur Televisión, which achieved historic viewership numbers for its broadcasts last year. So far, the channel has already aired two novice bullfights earlier this January, featuring many promising young bullfighters from Spain. On March 30, the channel will highlight another thrilling event taking place at the recently revitalized bullring of Marbella. This venue had been closed for years but returned last season, promising to engage audiences anew.

This specific event is particularly noteworthy as it marks Canal Sur's second broadcast from the Marbella bullring, following last August's nighttime event featuring horseback bulls. The passionate audience has demonstrated strong interest, especially considering the participants—Pedro Gallego, Martín Morilla, and Ignacio Candelas—young bullfighters known for tackling the adversities of their profession with unwavering determination.

The organization of this Circuito de Novilladas de Andalucía has received considerable support from institutions such as the Junta de Andalucía and Fundación Toro de Lidia. Canal Sur has affirmed its commitment to covering all six upcoming events through their broadcasting channel, ensuring fans do not miss any of the excitement. This year, the bullfights benefit from significant collaboration with local government agencies from Sevilla, Málaga, Córdoba, Granada, Cádiz, and Huelva, alongside institutions like the Instituto Andaluz de la Juventud and Fundación Cajasol.

On the broadcast schedule, audiences can eagerly anticipate:

  • March 30 – Marbella: Novillos by Fermín Bohórquez, featuring Pedro Gallego, Martín Morilla, and Ignacio Candelas.

The Spanish bullfighting scene is about to explode with coverage, as March will see up to 18 bullfights nationwide, including live broadcasts from various regional networks like Canal Sur, Castilla-La Mancha Media, and Telemadrid, among others. The anticipation surrounds the March events, starting with the famed Feria de Fallas de Valencia, where the channel OneToro will broadcast multiple live events simultaneously with Canal Sur.

The month also marks the start of the competition with the popular Copa Chenel, which Telemadrid will debut on March 1. This competition will highlight talent from regions including San Agustín del Guadalix and Estremera, gearing audiences up for more flair and drama as the season kicks off.

Canal Sur's commitment to enhancing cultural programming continues with coverage of the 35th edition of the Cádiz Carnival. The network reflects on decades of rich tradition, having started covering the carnival festivities since 1990. This year's final event is notable, starting at 8 pm on the festive Friday, where viewers can enjoy live commentary and performances reflecting the vibrancy of Andalusian culture.

Despite the challenge posed by newer platforms and online consumption altering viewer habits, Canal Sur aims to capture significant audiences with their broadcasts of the final carnival events. The network has reported various viewership figures dipping below expectations, with around 150,000 spectators per gala, prompting discussions on how to revitalize viewer engagement. This highlights the need for adaptation as online viewing becomes more prevalent with platforms like Onda Cádiz increasing competitive pressures.

Canal Sur’s approach to regional programming puts it at the forefront of cultural broadcasting, not only reporting on events but embodying and nurturing the traditions and identities of its audience. Looking toward the season, every performance aired will continue the channel's legacy of supporting local arts, demonstrated through years of coverage and interaction with their communities.

The impact of institutions like Canal Sur and their approach to programming is underscored by their commitment to showcase both the glamour and grit of traditions, highlighting matadors who earn their place against formidable odds and entertaining carnivals—capturing the very essence of Andalusian culture. With renewed focus and passion, Canal Sur is set to embrace the upcoming events showcasing the talent and heritage of the region.
