Four-time Olympian accepts role as assistant coach for player development with Wolverines

Canadian Basketball Star Natalie Achonwa Joins Michigan Coaching Staff

Canadian basketball great Natalie Achonwa has officially transitioned from player to coach, as she recently joined the Michigan Wolverines coaching staff. Announced on Tuesday, Achonwa will serve as the assistant coach focusing on player development for the NCAA women's basketball team.

Achonwa, who boasts a remarkable playing career, is regarded as one of the leading figures in Canadian basketball, having represented her country at the Olympics four times. She remarked on her appointment, stating, "Anyone that's been part of this [journey] or known me for a long time knows coaching is something I've always wanted to do." Though she will miss the thrill of being on the court, she feels ready to embrace this new challenge.

Starting her professional career when she was drafted ninth overall by the Indiana Fever during the 2014 WNBA Draft out of Notre Dame, Achonwa played nine seasons in the league, including stints with the Fever from 2015 to 2020 and the Minnesota Lynx starting 2021. Over her years, she averaged 7.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game during her time on WNBA courts. Her transition to coaching is built on her deep basketball IQ and experience.

While most players retire and move away from the sport, Achonwa's commitment to basketball remains strong. She expressed her desire to give back, having been inspired by the numerous leaders and coaches who have helped her throughout her career. "I've been fortunate to have some amazing leaders and coaches and mentors on my own [journey] and I really wanted an opportunity to give back to the game," she stated.

Throughout her time with the Canadian national team, Achonwa made significant contributions, playing 79 games—the second most of any player on the team—and garnering the record for the most Olympic assists (43). She also captained Canada at the recently hosted Paris Games. Achonwa led her national squad to its first gold medal at the 2015 FIBA AmeriCup, celebrating their first major triumph after 20 years.

Given her rich distinct skill set, there is hope and excitement among Wolverines' fans and players for what Achonwa can bring to the program. Achonwa’s role is particularly focused on developing younger players, helping shape the future of U-M basketball.

Looking forward, there are possibilities for her to remain involved with Canada Basketball, as she remains passionate about the sport and its younger athletes. She stated, "Canada Basketball is who I am... I’m still invested, the growth of our game, those coming up after us will always be important to me." Achonwa's next chapter aims to bolster the sport and inspire the next generation of athletes.

Overall, Natalie Achonwa stepping onto the court as a coach marks not only the closure of her playing chapter but also the excitement of what lies ahead. Her experience, passion, and dedicated approach to mentoring younger players promise to influence the future of Michigan women’s basketball significantly.
