Canada’s sevens rugby teams captured the spotlight on the opening day of the HSBC Vancouver Sevens Tournament, with both the Women’s and Men’s teams showcasing their talents and going undefeated.
On February 21, 2025, the tournament kicked off at the iconic BC Place, celebrating its 10th anniversary with vibrant fan activities alongside thrilling matches. Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team opened their account with two impressive wins, beginning against Brazil. Charity Williams made history by scoring her 100th career try and surpassing 500 career points during this match. After scoring first, Canada faced tough resistance as Brazil tied the game at 5-5, but Williams' quick response restored Canada's lead.
“I am just really proud of myself for being in the game for as long as I have,” Williams reflected after the game. “It was awesome to get the ball from our captain who has just been wonderful to play with.” Canada emerged victorious, finishing the match at 26-17.
The Women’s team continued their momentum against Spain, with Asia Hogan-Rochester highlighting the game with her first-half hat trick. Canada dominated the field, leading 29-0 at halftime, and eventually winning 41-5. “I feel like I'm just hitting my stride this season for sure,” Hogan-Rochester told reporters after the match, crediting her growth and confidence as key factors to her success this season.
Meanwhile, the Canada Men’s Sevens Team also had a roaring start. They faced Trinidad and Tobago first, securing a convincing 55-12 victory. Ethan Hager led the charge with his hat trick, and expressed satisfaction with the team's initial performance. “We’ve been working a lot, and I am proud of the first effort, but we have to keep building as we get ready to compete against the teams on the Challenger Series so we can earn promotion back to the top series,” he stated.
The Men’s team continued strong performances, defeating Japan later the same day, with Brenden Black opening the scoring. Black described the experience as “unreal,” emphasizing the thrill of performing before the home crowd. The final score against Japan was 33-12.
With both teams performing excellently on day one, they prepared to face tougher competition on February 22, where the Women’s team was set to play against Australia, current champions of the HSBC Sevens Series. The Men’s team was also scheduled to finalize their pool play with matches against Trinidad and Tobago and Japan.
Fans at the stadium were treated to not only intense rugby action but also various interactive activities. The tournament features seven rugby-themed light installations throughout downtown Vancouver, complementing the electrifying atmosphere with artistic flair.
For rugby enthusiasts unable to attend, matches could be viewed on TSN3 and TSN+, ensuring fans worldwide could catch all the excitement as it unfolded.
With the stage set for remarkable competitions and potential upsets, the HSBC Vancouver Sevens Tournament promised to deliver exceptional sportsmanship and entertainment, celebrating ten years of this international rugby tradition.
