Istanbul-based distributor Madd Entertainment has officially released the international trailer for the much-anticipated English-language drama “El Turco,” showcasing the talents of Turkish megastar Can Yaman. This six-episode series, which blends elements of history, action-adventure, and romance, centers around a legendary figure from the Ottoman Empire who symbolizes the connection between Turkey and the Western world.
“El Turco” is set to rollout today, March 21, 2025, on several major platforms including Voyo in Romania, IVI in Russia, and Globoplay in Brazil. In Italy, a special ten-minute teaser will air today on Mediaset Infinity, while the full series will be available starting March 27 on Mediaset’s Canale 5. Audiences in Honduras will see the show on March 23 via Teleonce and it will make its debut in Turkey on April 2 on Gaín. The MENA region is expected to follow suit with a launch on Starz on April 18.
In “El Turco,” Yaman portrays Hasan Balaban, a 17th-century Ottoman soldier whose story is both captivating and remarkable. During the Turkish army’s campaign to conquer Vienna in 1683, Balaban was grievously injured, leading to his unexpected arrival in the Italian Alpine village of Moena, situated 200 kilometers from the battlefront. There, he earned the nickname “El Turco” from the locals as he led them in a rebellion against oppressive tax laws, transforming himself into a celebrated local hero.
Can Yaman expressed his enthusiasm for the character and the story during a panel at the Mipcom TV market last October, saying, “Now, Moena is a ski resort, but many people there still feel Turkish. There is a Turkish week, they pull out Turkish flags, and there’s a statue of this man who’s celebrated as a hero.” He reflected on the surprising historical aspects, adding, “When you get to see that, you are so impressed. The fact that it all happened in Italy, where I’ve lived, and that there was this hero from the Ottoman Empire … When I first read the script, I got really excited.”
This ambitious project is produced by Ay Yapim, one of Turkey’s leading production houses. It features a diverse cast from nine different countries, showcasing global talent with actors such as Will Kemp, Greta Ferro, David Nykl, Kieran O’Reilly, Veronica Ferres, and Maddalena Aragão joining Yaman in pivotal roles. The series was crafted by seasoned writers Kerem Deren and Çişil Hazal Tenim, and is directed by Uluç Bayraktar, known for his compelling storytelling style in productions like “Ten Days of a Bad Man.” The visual appeal of “El Turco” is enhanced by production designer Domenico Sica, recognized for his work in “Wonder Woman,” and costume designer Carlo Poggioli, admired for his contributions to “The New Pope.”
With such a talented team behind “El Turco,” expectations are high for the series to resonate with audiences by offering not just entertainment, but also a look at the dual heritage that weaves through historical narratives. As the series launches across different regions, it aims to foster a greater understanding of the unique ties that have historically connected Turkey and Italy, not just through the lens of conflict but also through shared stories of heroism and community.
The initial planned playdates suggest a structured approach to reaching various international audiences, creating anticipation around each release. While the full scope of international airings is still being finalized, viewers are eager to see how this historical drama unfolds through unique stories and diverse perspectives.
Ultimately, “El Turco” is set to explore themes of identity and cultural bridging, providing a unique narrative that highlights the intertwined destinies of different nations against the backdrop of history. The legacy of Hasan Balaban, transformed from a soldier into a beloved local figure, serves as a fascinating focal point for a series that not only entertains but also prompts viewers to reflect on the broader implications of such historical legacies.
