One promising approach involves using reinforcement learning (RL) with deep Q-learning techniques to optimize traffic management systems effectively.
Traffic congestion has become one of the pressing challenges for urban centers worldwide. Cities are grappling with the ramifications caused by increasing vehicle ownership, which is often unregulated by infrastructure enhancements. This imbalance not only escalates commute times but significantly contributes to air pollution, affecting public health and safety. Accordingly, authorities are exploring advanced technologies to streamline urban transportation.
Recently, researchers have proposed employing reinforcement learning to tackle these issues, presenting novel algorithms aimed at optimizing traffic signals and managing flow. The study led by Qadri et al. suggests employing sophisticated deep Q-networks (DQN) to drive these improvements. The research emphasizes the importance of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) which collate data and apply real-time analysis through machine learning. There's also the question of integrating these findings with existing infrastructure.
