Cam Skattebo Rising As NFL Draft Favorite

Arizona State standout leaves lasting impression after stellar Peach Bowl performance

While many college football players are vying for attention as the NFL Draft approaches, Cam Skattebo from Arizona State University is making headlines for all the right reasons. His recent standout performance against Texas, where he led his team valiantly during the College Football Playoff quarterfinal, placed him prominently on the radar of both scouts and fans alike.

Arizona State's head coach Kenny Dillingham wasted no time after the Sun Devils' heart-wrenching 39-31 double-overtime loss to the Longhorns, throwing his support behind Skattebo and expressing his hope for the Arizona Cardinals to draft him. "I’m really excited of the foundation ... if the (Arizona) Cardinals can just draft Cam so we can keep him home, that’d be awesome,” Dillingham remarked. His enthusiasm reflects not only Skattebo's talent but also the potential he brings to any team.

During the matchup, Skattebo turned what looked to be bleak circumstances around. With Arizona State trailing 24-8, he made significant contributions, demonstrating his ability to influence the game on multiple fronts. His final stats were nothing short of impressive: 143 yards rushing, two rushing touchdowns, eight receptions totaling 99 yards, and even throwing for 42 yards and another touchdown. Notably, his ability to impact both the ground and air game under pressure earned him the Peach Bowl MVP title.

Looking at his collegiate career standings, it’s evident why scouts are intrigued. He established the Arizona State single-season rushing record with 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns on 293 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. Over his four-year career, including two seasons at Sacramento State, he compiled staggering totals of 4,386 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns, accompanied by 1,386 receiving yards and eight more touchdowns. These statistics paint Skattebo as not just another running back, but as one who offers substantial versatility on the field.

The conversation around him will inevitably turn to the upcoming NFL Combine, where his performance metrics—especially his 40-yard dash and shuttle run—will be pivotal. Questions abound about how his speed will translate, with evaluators eager to see how fast he can run. “How fast can he run?” has become the linchpin of discussions surrounding Skattebo as his draft stock continues to rise.

When asked to compare himself to NFL players, Skattebo downplayed the question, saying, "I like to say myself," showcasing his confidence and unique playing style. He draws inspiration from notable players like Christian McCaffrey and Marshawn Lynch. His unique blend of agility, power, and versatility has led observers to liken him to the likes of McCaffrey, Mike Alstott, and Jerome Bettis—players renowned for their difficult tackle ability.

Evaluators are aware of Skattebo's game-changing potential. His knack for making big plays and driving his team forward not only showcases his skills but invites comparisons of him being much more than just another running back prospect. His ability to make tacklers miss and gain yards after contact makes him one of the more intriguing prospects going forward. Identifying him as the potential fan-favorite for whichever NFL team secures his talents seems all but guaranteed.

Looking forward to April's Draft, Skattebo's fate will be determined as teams weigh their options and assess how he can contribute to their respective systems. Whether he hears his name called early on or later rounds, one thing is clear: Cam Skattebo is not just another name on the draft board. He’s a game-changer, ready to make his mark with one lucky team.
