Callejas Shines With Victory In Tour Des Abruzzes

Georg Zimmermann takes overall lead after intense queen stage

In a thrilling display of endurance and strategy, Edison Alejandro Callejas of Petrolike claimed victory in the queen stage of the Tour des Abruzzes 2025 on April 17, 2025. The 24-year-old Colombian cyclist executed a brilliant attack just over nine kilometers from the finish line, showcasing his climbing prowess on the demanding ascent to Roccaraso. Finishing the stage in 4 hours, 10 minutes, and 53 seconds, Callejas crossed the line a remarkable 40 seconds ahead of his closest rival, Georg Zimmermann from Intermarché-Wanty, who has now taken the lead in the overall classification.

The third stage of the Tour des Abruzzes, which spanned 160 kilometers from San Demetrio ne’ Vestini to Roccaraso, was characterized by its challenging terrain. Riders faced a total elevation gain of approximately 2,700 meters, making it a true test for climbers. The final stretch included a steep climb to the Aremogna station, featuring sections with gradients nearing 10%. This stage was crucial for those aiming for the overall victory, and the gaps created during this stage could prove pivotal as the race progresses.

As the race unfolded, Callejas positioned himself strategically, anticipating the moves of his competitors. Early in the climb, he made his decisive move, breaking away from the peloton and leaving behind the favorites, including Georg Zimmermann and David de la Cruz of Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, who ultimately finished second and third, respectively. Zimmermann's effort not only secured him a podium spot but also earned him the leader's jersey in the general classification, with a cumulative time of 11 hours, 7 minutes, and 7 seconds.

The stage was not without its drama, as the weather played a role in the dynamics of the race. Riders faced challenging conditions, including rain, which added an extra layer of difficulty to the already demanding climbs. Despite this, Callejas's performance was unwavering, and he managed to fend off the strong charge from the chasing group.

Following Callejas across the finish line, Zimmermann crossed in 4:11:33, while de la Cruz finished just 46 seconds behind the winner. The top five was rounded out by Pablo Torres from UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who finished fourth at 48 seconds back, and Mathys Rondel from Tudor Pro Cycling Team, who matched Torres's time. Other notable finishers included Marco Brenner, Filippo Fiorelli, and Alessandro Covi, all of whom demonstrated their climbing capabilities in this grueling stage.

Callejas's victory marks a significant milestone in his professional career, being his first major win. His tactics and execution were lauded by fans and pundits alike, who noted his ability to time his attack perfectly against a backdrop of fierce competition. “It feels incredible to finally win at this level,” Callejas said after the race. “I knew I had to make my move early to create a gap, and thankfully, it worked out.”

As the riders prepare for the next stages, the overall classification has tightened, with de la Cruz and Torres just 11 and 18 seconds behind Zimmermann, respectively. The competition is heating up, and every second will count as they head into the remaining stages of the Tour des Abruzzes.
