Call Of Duty Black Ops 7 Unveiled With Star Cast

Microsoft and Activision announce consecutive Black Ops release set in 2035 featuring Milo Ventimiglia and Kiernan Shipka with a surprise marketing approach

In a surprising move that has shaken up the gaming world, Microsoft and Activision have unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, marking a historic first for the franchise: two consecutive Black Ops installments released back-to-back. The announcement came at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 8, 2025, catching many fans off guard with a teaser featuring a cybernetic butterfly and a tentacled, upside-down hellscape, setting the tone for a mind-bending new chapter in the series.

Developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, Black Ops 7 is set in the year 2035, more than four decades after the events of Black Ops 6, which debuted just last fall in 2024. This leap into the near future contrasts with the series’ usual timeline, which had previously focused on Cold War and early 21st-century conflicts. The game continues the narrative threads from both Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6, plunging players into a world on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare.

At the heart of this futuristic turmoil is David Mason, the protagonist originally introduced in Black Ops 2 and son of the iconic Alex Mason. Milo Ventimiglia, known for his roles in television and film, lends his voice and motion capture talents to Mason, who receives a subtle makeover to resemble Ventimiglia more closely. Ventimiglia’s casting was described by Activision marketing chief Tyler Bahl as "the right fit for an iconic character from the franchise and one of the fan favorites." Mason leads a team battling an enemy who weaponizes fear above all else, a theme that promises to deepen the psychological intensity the series is known for.

Joining Ventimiglia are Kiernan Shipka and Michael Rooker, adding star power and continuity to the cast. Shipka portrays Emma Kagan, a new character who serves as the CEO of an organization called The Guild. Bahl expressed excitement about Shipka’s role, noting that her performance is expected to "really blow people away." Meanwhile, Rooker returns as Mike Harper, reprising his role from Black Ops 2, much to the delight of longtime fans.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike affecting major video game publishers, including Activision, Black Ops 7 is notably not impacted by the union’s work stoppage, allowing development to proceed uninterrupted. This is a relief for fans eager to dive into the game, which promises to include a cooperative campaign—a feature that has only appeared in a handful of Call of Duty titles, all developed by Treyarch.

The game will also bring back the popular round-based zombies mode, continuing a beloved tradition within the Black Ops sub-series. While the futuristic setting might evoke memories of Black Ops 4, which was set in the 2040s and featured extreme movement mechanics, early indications suggest that Black Ops 7 will build on the omnimovement system introduced in Black Ops 6, potentially incorporating new gameplay innovations without venturing into the more radical territory of its predecessor.

Activision’s decision to release two Black Ops games consecutively marks a significant departure from the franchise’s traditional release schedule. Historically, the Call of Duty calendar alternated between sub-series, with Infinity Ward producing Modern Warfare titles every few years. Treyarch and Raven Software leading two back-to-back releases is unprecedented. As Matt Cox, Call of Duty’s general manager, explained, "Our vision from the start was to create a back-to-back series experience for our players that embraced the uniqueness of the Black Ops sub-franchise."

Tyler Bahl elaborated on the marketing strategy, highlighting the creative opportunities this shift presents: "Delivering consecutive Black Ops games also allows our teams the tremendous opportunity to tap not only into our own creativity but also embrace the shift from a ’90s setting to the new 2035 future setting within our marketing." This approach aims to reinvigorate the franchise, offering a fresh narrative and aesthetic while maintaining the core elements that fans cherish.

However, the move has not been without skepticism. Industry observers recall the rushed release of Modern Warfare 3 in 2023, which followed closely after Modern Warfare 2 and was reportedly accelerated due to a delay in Black Ops 6. That hurried development cycle resulted in what some considered the weakest Call of Duty game in two decades, raising concerns about the potential risks of consecutive releases. Still, Activision seems confident that this time, the strategy will pay off.

Adding to the intrigue, Activision has adopted a low-key promotional approach for Black Ops 7. Tyler Bahl likened the rollout to a "Beyonce album dropping," emphasizing minimal pre-promotion to surprise players and create buzz organically. "Usually at this point in time, we would have teased everything that’s coming out," Bahl said. "The whole goal was to really do something different, and for us to zag and show up in a unique way. And one way of doing that is almost not doing any pre-promotion and giving it to players in a really unexpected way."

The game will launch across multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Xbox PC, Battle.net, and Steam. Notably, it will be available on day one through Xbox’s Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions, ensuring accessibility for a broad audience.

Fans eager for a deeper dive will have to wait for the full reveal later this summer, which promises to shed more light on the game’s story, gameplay mechanics, and multiplayer features. Until then, the teaser and sparse details have already set the gaming community abuzz, eager to see how the franchise’s leap into 2035 will unfold.

With its star-studded cast, bold narrative choices, and innovative marketing strategy, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. As the world edges closer to chaos in the game’s storyline, players worldwide are gearing up to join David Mason and his team in a fight against fear itself—an epic battle that promises to redefine the Black Ops saga for a new generation.
